"What the heck was that?"
A flawed attempt at cloning a busker and his dog. Earlier on, Matthew and Elizabeth came across the busker (Harry) sleeping on the grass with his dog. A pod was nearby. Matthew gave the pod a hard kick and seemed to damage it. So instead of growing a perfect duplicate of the busker, the result was a combination of busker and dog. A flawed copy that wouldn't fool anyone.
A flaw yes but a heck of a good watch dog.

I thought it was the creepiest thing I ever saw in a movie! When that thing came running I wanted to run away myself. It was completely unexpected.
shareAmen, milkhole
shareThat thing scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. To this day I'm still not a big fan of the boxer breed. Because of this movie they just creep me out!
shareIn that case you won't want to watch this video:

I am pretty sure the final shot of the dog-man is just the actual dog wearing a latex mask with a slit cut in the mouth for the dog's tongue to stick through. However they did it, it works! Creeped me out thoroughly when I saw it as a kid 35 years ago.

Same here. Did you watched this in the theater when it first came out? I did when I was eight.
shareI'm pretty sure I saw it on TV in '79-80 during tween years. At age 8 that dog-man would have had me doing double-takes at the neighborhood pups for months afterward. Brave kid!

Great scene - one of the scariest moments in this film

Best scene in the movie besides the ending, that's what. Those two scenes make it a worthy remake.
shareSuch a creepy and strange sight. It always makes me wonder if the pods would take over any living thing including animals and plants not just people?
Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .
I just watched this movie for the first time today and that man dog was the weirdest, most unsettling, and most unexpected moment of the film.
shareI do not think the pods would normally body snatch animals. My rationale is that they take over the DOMINANT life form on each planet and on Earth its humans, I think that was a fluke and normally pets and other animals would not be taken over.
