Why were rape films so popular during the 70s

I spit on your grave, Lipstick, Ms. 45 etc. Why are torture films so popular today. Why do all San Fransisco Giants fans talk endless *beep* I still think Matt Cain is awesome just not as good as Cole Hammels. Just be humble, Dickheads!

I think it's the same reason all those dozens of slasher films were released after Friday the 13th and all these supernatural/found footage horror films are being released now after the success of Paranormal Activity, when one formula is found to be financially successful in a film, others will imitate it in hopes that their film can be successful as well.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

I would say this is more of a revenge film than a torture film

reply

No, I think this is a torture film. It's torturing the audience.

It may have also been related to 2nd Wave feminism happening through out the 70s. Rape was an issue which they dealt with (wanting justice) and Zarchi was inspired to make I Spit on Your Grave after helping a rape victim get treatment, so such films help show rape's horrific nature.

Society was becoming more violent due to Vietnam, liberal pols and courts, etc. And there was more freedom to depict it in film. This stuff (sex/violence) always had appeal, that appeal just became expressed more then.

Basically that. People were become more 'liberated' in what they could get away with showing in movies, so they just went all out to show audiences things they never saw before, I think largely to say 'we can', but also to say 'this is really happening out there, can you afford to look away?'
