I saw this for the first time today.
I had only seen the remake years ago and I liked it but I remember thinking "the original can't be THIS brutal and over the top"
But I was surprised to see that it kind of IS!
The rape and the murders, they were all pretty horrific.
I'm sad that I went all these years without checking it out.
Me too. I was in high school when this came out and just saw it this year. Now I'll give the remake a view.

I think it's still pretty brutal today. Maybe not compared to stuff like Saw and Hostel, but moreso than all the generic PG-13 haunted house and found footage crap that dominates the horror scene these days.

Personally, I think that The Excorcist and Alice Sweet Alice were more disturbing than this. Those two movies were released earlier.
shareThe original is very brutal and the grainy photography adds to the atmosphere. I mean you've got a crucifixion/burning, rape, two shootings and a dog being gutted. Beauty and Beast the dogs are my two favourite characters.
shareThe Hills Have Eyes' most brutal moments had a deeply disturbing quality, which remains on your mind long after you've seen it. The Hills Have Eyes's sudden ending, with the flash of red on screen, emphasised this for me.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.
