Sawyer Beane

Has anyone ever heard of Sawyer Beane? He was the head of a cannibalistic family in Scotland, similar to the one in the the movie. Does any one know if Wes Craven based this film on the old Beane family legends?

reply

It's Sawney Beane, and yes, he proably was influenced by the legend as many other film makers have been

Wes Craven has stated that Sawney Beane was the inspiration for The Hills Have Eyes. He said that the inbred, cannibalistic family's crimes AND their extremely violent punishment after being caught (they were extensively tortured prior to execution) was the inspiration for this movie about a family that is brutally attacked and becomes almost equally as savage in their retaliation.

Craven chose the story because he thought it was a great encapsulation of the fragility and hypocrisy of society.

And I reckon there's still room for a full-blooded (he-heh!) film about ol' Sawney himself. (Even though he's a bit of a folk legend, and if he ever did actually exist his story's grown somewhat in the telling.)

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.
