The flute tune
What's the name of the tune Joe kept trying to learn to play on the flute?
shareI believe the song he attempted to play was "Ciribiribin", composed by Alberto Pestalozza in 1898.
Harry James used it as his band's theme song, heard here:

And the instrument Joe played was a soprano saxophone, not a flute.
In all honesty, it sounds like a slightly tweaked version of the main recurring theme of the movie, written by Davd Grusin. If you ask me.

I only hear a very feint resemblance to the Harry James tune that the other poster cited. However, the wiki page for "Ciribiribin" does cite this as the tune being played poorly by Joe Pendleton: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciribiribin
shareOhh and the other thing, I can't believe I didn't mention this the first time, that's not a flute! That's a sax, alto sax I think, or maybe tenor sax? I think it's the same instrument that Kenny G plays. A flute is almost always silver, and held up sideways, from every time I've ever seen it played. I'm sure somebody out there holds it down, or upside down, or whatever, but that's a saxophone, not a flute.

havent seen this in years... but think it was a clarinet he played
shareGood point, I think it's tonality that makes me think its a sax, but I'll have my son take a look who plays clairnet right now, and have him opine. Not sure, but I'll figure it out and post.

Just watched preview on YouTube. Due to the fact that it is "gold" and metal, I'm quite certain it is an alto sax. Not a clarinet. I think Kenny G plays the same instrument and I know he is playing "alto sax." I'll look it up later, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct.

Folks folks....trust me on this one. I began my musical career on woodwinds, first clarinet then over to saxophone.
The instrument is a SOPRANO saxophone.
An alto sax is curved, as is a tenor sax and a baritone sax.
The differences are these:
Alto: Key of Eb
The alto sax has curved bell (the flared end), and is on average around 24-25 inches in length from the mouthpiece to the bass.
The neck has one curve, at an angle around 110-120 degrees. The mouthpiece attaches to the neck as with all saxophones.
Tenor: Key of Bb
The tenor sax also has a curved bell, and is longer than an alto...approximately 30-36 inches in length. The additional length results in a lower, deeper pitch than an alto.
The neck has a bit of an S curve rather than a single bend as with an alto.
Soprano: Key of C
The soprano sax does NOT have a curved bell or curved neck, and does resemble a clarinet, and is around 24-25 inches in length. However, a clarinet is typically made of either some composite fiber or wood (very expensive). The saxophone is typically made of BRASS. Also, a clarinet is in the key of Bb. Kenny G plays a soprano sax primarily, although he does on occasion play an alto or tenor. Benny Goodman played a clarinet (Google him and look at the color of the instrument....it's BLACK).
There is a sopranino sax, which looks exactly like a soprano sax but is somewhat shorter in length. However the pitch is much higher and more shrill. This instrument is not as widely used as a soprano, similar to piccolo vs. flute.
If ya don't buy it, check this site...it has a clear comparison of all the different saxophones.

Thanks, yeah, confirmed with my son, very soon after my last post. A Soprano Sax, my boy knew right away only a metal instrument could be a sax, and that a clarinet would not be metal. Thanks Ben.
