I hadn't seen this film since the early 80s--and maybe I only saw it once in 1978. I don't remember. Watching it again now, it seems to me like a more understated, "white trash" Blues Brothers precursor, which sure didn't hurt it, as The Blues Brothers is one of my all-time favorites.
