Why did Clint Eastwood do this movie?

OK, so Every Which Way But Loose is an enjoyable but decidedly schlocky movie. So why did Eastwood take this role although he arguably didn't have to worry about paying his bills due to the success of the Dirty Harry movies?

BHWHAHAHA!

because he's clint eastwood, and he doesn't care what the critics think, plus this was a good movie

reply

Just because the movie is lighthearted in tone does not make it schlocky.

And 'Every Which Way But Loose' was a very risky choice by Eastwood......so I don't think you can say Eastwood did it for the bucks. Most people were trying to tell Eastwood not to do the film.

Eastwood was a big star by this point, and pretty much could've done what he wanted. But I think what drew him to a movie like this was because it went against his archetype, it was lighthearted and funny, and it appealed to middle-class America. It was something different. A new challenge.

You've just restated my original question.

...are you slow or something?

Ye wanna ward with me?

Maybe he made it because he liked the idea, he thought he would have fun making the movie, might make a few bucks from the movie, plus hang out for a few weeks with a bunch of his buddies and mistress while calling it a business expense?

reply

Let me just note also, taht this film was Warner Bros. top earner for the year. We are talking about a hit film, why NOT do it??

reply

"For a few dollars more?"

Brilliant

"Settle down Francis", obviously you’re a youge'n, it was the 70s.

Every Which Way But Loose (1978) $12,000,000 (15% of gross)

He a friggin fortune off it.

reply

If you say Eastwood did it for money, then you'd have to say he expected it to be a massive hit......and this was a very risky choice for Eastwood so you guys aren't making much sense.

As I already said, he liked to play against his archtype. This was a film that depicted the hard-working middle class, which probably appealed to him, it was a chance to possibly expand his fan base with this character, and ultimately I think he liked to challenge himself and he just liked the story.

I just watched Eastwood on Eastwood (it's on the Blu Ray of Unforgiven) and one of the reasons it said he enjoyed doing the film was because he was recently divorced and his kids enjoyed being on set. Also from the footage it seemed he really enjoyed himself.

Prior to being picked up by the Warner Brothers studio, the movie's script by Jeremy Joe Kronsberg had been turned down by many of the other major Hollywood studios and production companies. The script originally was intended for Burt Reynolds.

None of the advisors to Clint Eastwood wanted him to do this film. They did not think it was funny or that audiences would get it. It ended up being a huge hit and inspired a money making sequel.

Reportedly, Eastwood was nervous about doing a comedy, and contacted Burt Reynolds for advice, as Reynolds had had a lot of experience doing comedies. Both would later co-star in the period cop comedy City Heat around six years later.

He did it simply because he wanted to. He had already made a lot of money, and was able to pick the movies he wanted to make. He said in an interview once that he usually desires the stories where the character he plays is a rebel. Because he is a rebel.

Years ago I watched a biography/documentary on Clint Eastwood (sorry I forget what the title was or who made the show). But in it, he said the reason he made this movie and it's sequel was at the time, he had done so many shoot-em-up films where he was always having to shoot & kill people, that it was starting to get to him inside. He just wanted to make some light-hearted, non-serious comedies so that he could alleviate some of the heaviness in his movie-making, even if the comedies he made ended up being stupid.
