So, was Lynn Halsey-Taylor a..a..prostitute??

After watching this movie countless times when I was a kid (I can still quote nearly the whole damn thing)I never thought anything of it, but seeing it again recently, it appears that LHT was some kind of traveling hooker or something.

I mean, she gave the ol' bedroom eyes to every guy that offered her a beer (the one guy at the bar, & the cowboy at the bowling alley), and not to mention poor Philo. He gave her that money & bought her the new outfit, then she high-tailed it outta there & acted like she hated him when he finally caught up to her.

Then, we have this Skylar dude as well as that Harland fella that she cavorts around with, who both apparently are aware of the flirting that LHT is doing. What's up with that?

I watched this probably a hundred times or more way back in the 80's when it was on regular rotation on HBO, but after seeing it with "grown up eyes", it kinda skewers my feelings about this movie. Not necessarily in a good way, or a bad way...just a weird way.

She wasnt a prostitute. She was pulling a con job. She gets a guys attention, milks him for some cash, then uses Skylar, her fellow con artist, to scare the guy off. Then she moves onto the next mark.

Philo messed things up by not getting scared off and not giving up on her.

That it. She was a hussler. Her and Skylar would hook in guys like Philoe, charm them, milk them for cash, then toss them aside.

I thought she was a manipulative user, not a prostitute.

A HUSTLER... Philo called her game out himself, right before she called him "the big dumb one"

No she wasn't a prostitute. She was a hustler, meaning she would manipulate men for her advantage; get them to like her so they'd buy her a drink, follow her around like a lost puppy, and give her money. She'd intentionally mislead them into thinking they had some kind of a real relationship, until it no longer suited her needs. Some people would say that this is only a few shades above being a prostitute. But the difference is she isn't going after just anybody. She does this to men she thinks she can get something significant from.

Yes, "hustler" is a better description that more accurately defines her.
