I heard alot about this movie and finally bought it on dvd. The story is really far fetched. I cant imagine that a cop would be willing to let the actual GUNMEN in an ARMED ROBBERY go just to bait the get away car driver. Seems kind of backwards. In reality the get away driver is not as significant as the gunman, he's just an accomplice or accesory and the gunman is the far bigger catch. Further I dont get why the driver wasnt arrested anyway, the cop let him go for what? Whether the driver was ripped of by the exchange or not is a moot point, he already committed the crimes. He was still an acomplice to 2 armed robberies, comitted 2 counts of murder and multiple counts of fleeing and eluding. WTF? He's just let go? Bruce Dern and O'neal were entertaining and the car chases were good too but the story was just so thin and nonsensical that it really wasnt worthwhile viewing.
'skonczal' I'm sorry to hear that you didn't think the movie was worth watching. I noticed your quote at the end which was uttered by Tom Sizemore in the movie 'Heat', so it was probably me who 'recommended' the movie to you, since I have been constantly telling people on the Heat boards to check this movie out. The reason I was trying to recommend people to see it, was because I thought 'Heat' fans(myself included) MIGHT enjoy a film with 'similarities' between them. Now I won't say there are many similarities, however I thought the 'criminal vs. detective' theme was similar(2 main characters in both films were the best at what they do, both detectives were portrayed as being somewhat 'obsessed' with catching their prey, both criminals were alone, allowed no attachments in their lives, etc.) To answer your question about the detective letting the 'armed robbers go free' in exchange for setting up the driver, well that was to show how 'obsessed' Bruce Dern's character was at wanting to catch the 'Driver' in a position where he was going to do '15 years' according to Dern when he confronts O'Neal in his cheap apartment/motel?. Also, Dern never charged O'Neal with anything, unless it was going to 'put him away for a long time', the same way Pacino did in Heat, when they were at the metals score. DeNiro knows something is wrong, so when he tells his crew to abort the mission, Pacino tells the other cop, "They didn't steal anything, don't you understand, it gets knocked back to some chicken!%#! misdemeanor, they do 6 months, then they're gone, that's right, they will walk away and you will let them, FU#@!!! So Dern was willing to let the 'ARMED ROBBERS go free', in the hopes that O'Neal would be allowed to commit this 'BIG JOB' and get nailed in the act, thus allowing the cop to 'catch his man', and put him away for '15 or so years'. That is what I believe happened in my humble opinion. I'm glad you checked this movie out(even if it wasn't me who recommended it to you) and wish you would've enjoyed it more than I did. Well, you did mention you found some parts of the movie entertaining, so perhaps it wasn't such a waste of time after all? I love this movie! Hence ,my username!
Actually I found out about the movie by reading a review of it in a "Consumer Reports Guide To The Movies" that was printed in the early 80's. Although it gave the movie a poor review, the summary of the movie itself sounded interesting. After checking it out on IMDB I figured it was a must see. After a second viewing, I agree that "the obsessed cop versus the master criminal" was intriguing and I found O'Neals' and Derns' performances to be entertaining enough to make the movie worth while viewing. Dern has some pretty good dialouge in the movie. However I still think the plot was alittle thin.
The movie isn't supposed to be plot or character driven anyway, it's all about the style and how Hill just takes you into the world of these characters (Similar to "Le Samourai", upon which this is based).
I agree. I thought the same thing while watching it. I would imagine that a well planned robbery is one that doesn't require any special skills from the driver beyond being able to drive normally while under pressure. The idea would be to plan things in such a way as to avoid a chase. Anyway , I did enjoy the movie. Well made. I like Bruce Dern.
