How fond is the farmer of his pet peacocks?
The farmer has pet peacocks, which hang around the house. We even see several of them roosting on a bannister at one point. (Presumably the bannister is the one around the windmill at the top of the house.)
We see Linda hiding her hands under her skirt, then trying to get very close to one of these peacocks. It seems she's trying to catch it. Later we see her plucking the feathers off a freshly killed bird. Then finally we see her roasting some sort of bird on the fire. So she's apparently captured, killed, and eaten one of the farmer's pet birds. Yet nobody ever yells at her over the incident.
Why isn't the farmer (or the foreman) ticked off?
