Plus they all wanted to protest the 55mph speed limit which was only a couple of years old at the time and the then problematic state laws which limited certain truckers and companies to certain areas of the country. The laws all disappeared with trucking deregulation by Reagan in the early 1980s and an interstate 65mph limit was back by the end of the 1980's in most places.
