This topic is in regards to the Cheezy Flicks Entertainment "Special" Edition DVD of 'Convoy'.
First off, some of you may or may not know that it was originally presented in 2.35 letterbox widescreen. On this DVD, the picture-already POOR enough in quality as it is-has been distorted and changed to a matted 1.85 aspect ratio. The audio is CRAP, and there are no extras of any kind-in itself an absolute NO-NO for so-called "special" editions.
I loved this movie growing up, though I saw it mainly on HBO and Cinemax in P&S fullscreen. However, unless some other studio gets their act together, aquires the rights to the film, and releases a better edition with some worthy extras and a PROPERLY remastered and restored Letterbox picture, I'm holding out on adding this to my colletcion. And A BIG fat THUMBS DOWN to Cheezy Flicks Entertainment!
Are you really the CEO of Cheesy flicks? Shouldn't you have a more mature handle than that? If you are, then you really should be more receptive to criticism, good or bad. If you are just some kid, then by all means, continue to make trouble on these boards.
No he's not....... Cheesy is spelled Cheezy... surely he would know how to spell his own company name... I doubt they are much of a "company"... They manufacture all of their products themselves on DVD-R media, the items I've received from them were VERY "Home-made" looking, all the way down to a peel of sticker used for the disc...
My experience with Cheezy flicks makes me think their "company office" is probably in their garage or basement...
For what they charge you would figure on getting much better than that.
Truckerflicks was much better, better quality playback, better packaging, no sticky label on the disc... 100% improvement

I was wondering about that and I was right. Cheezy Flicks' entire attitude towards the film (right down to their label name, unfortunately) seems to be a fairly derisive one. Convoy may not be the greatest film ever, but having been directed by Sam Peckinpah it deserves more respect than this.
That's why you shouldn't waste your time and $$$ on the cheezy Flicks DVD, pick up the German released uncut version from Kinowelt, it has the proper 2:35 aspect ratio as well as the scenes that were cut from all other DVD versions.. you can pick it up on Amazon, I also heard it will be available on the Truckerflicks.com when they update their site as well.
I recently ordered Convoy and White Line Fever from TruckerFlicks after reading some of the posts on this site and was very disappointed...there was no audio on White Line Fever and Convoy was too dark and the audio faint, and -- they both made my DVD player freak out and cut off all be itself(?) and then when I tried to play the original version of other movies it did the same thing but eventually stopped freaking out and played normally after I stopped trying to play the TruckerFlicks DVDs. White Line Fever does have audio if I play it on my PC though. Didn't see a way to contact TruckerFlicks on their website about the problem so I could exchange them maybe. Really haven't experienced this before with ANY DVDs and I've had my DVD player for a while now.
For what it's worth I felt my copy of the Kinowelt "uncut" version of Convoy wasn't worth it just to get the extra footage of the Chuck Arnoldi(sp) interviews and subsequent mooning scene. I have a copy of Convoy from Pacific Home Entertainment thru Amazon.com and the audio and picture are top rate quality and I didn't really notice the minute or so of missing footage that didn't really add a whole lot to the pace of the movie although it did give insight into the various reasons the truckers were in the Convoy and their own dissatisfaction with the status quo of the day.
I had been talking to a local long time video renter many times about Convoy's dvd release problems. The over all problem is music rights. Although the other artists and songs seen and found on the movie soundtrack are only heard as portable radio background music, it is the selling of that music to dvd is the probably block of selling it to Walmart, Best Buy, etc. Music rights are typically the bottem line problem on dvd releases.
I asked producer Michael Deeley abouting doing commentary for a dvd, he downed it. I know someone involved on the movie that would but wants a extrordinary amount of money, although he would be worth it.
Both Pacific Family Entertainment and Cheesyflicks probably paid a quick dvd cut release right but it was just a Region 1 coversion of the edited UK region 2. And not being experts on the movie would not know of the edited material. They dont and wont hear of negative replies. But I think "the customer's always right" has been deleted from the market.
If I had the money (lottery) I would get Convoy to dvd release but remove all background music and replace it. With what, I have an idea which should have been done in the first place but won't reveal it till I have dvd credited involvement.
You would be a first to have a problem that I am aware of, I've been on many different boards and have seen posts from hundreds of people who buy from Truckerflicks on a regular basis, and none have posted any problems at all, perhaps you have a malfunctioning or defective DVD player.
I own all of them, the Kinowelt, Cheezy Flicks, and Pacific Family Entertainment Convoy DVD's, personally they were all crap with the exception of Kinowelt, Pacific Family and Cheezy Flicks have a 1:85 aspect ratio, so it's almost full screen, Convoy was shot with a 2:35 aspect ratio, so it's a much thinner Widescreen than what you would normally find, however this is how it was filmed and how it was meant to be watched.. not stretched to 1:85 like the Cheezy Flicks DVD or cut off on the sides like the Pacific Family DVD, Also, Convoy was filmed with a Mono audio track, Cheezy and Pacific split the audio in two tracks to simulate a Stereo soundtrack, they did no digital remixing or cleaning up the audio at all, it's actually quite terrible on a nice system, Kinowelt digitally restored both the film print and the audio, and the film has a digital Mono soundtrack, which would be the closest thing you could ever get to the way it was supposed to sound in the theater, it was quite impressive if you have your sound system set up properly to gain the full effects of the sound. If you don't know what your doing and how to adjust your surround system for something with a digital mono track it would sound a bit low... in any case, you have a remote turn the volume up a bit.. it's what the volume button is for.
As far as the image being a bit dark, it wasn't on my 65 inch television, however all TV's and DVD players do not decode the same, and that can make differences in how a picture looks on different TV screens (just go to your local Best Buy and look at the TV screens that they usually have set up playing the same thing.. they don't always all look the same, because some decode the signal different than others. In any case, you have a menu selection for your TV and a selection for brightness, once again.. use it.. it's what it's there for.
I'm not sure about your problem with White Line Fever, perhaps it was just a defective disc, but more likely it's an incompatability with the brand of DVD player you have, I bought Whitle Line Fever from them and it works fine in all of my players (I have 6 different ones)The only complaint I had was that it wasn't Widescreen.. I can't stand to watch movies in Full Screen anymore.. it's so out dated, of course before DVD I had already made the switch to Laserdisc so I could get my films in Widescreen.... Full Screen is just plain crap.
Perhaps it's time for you to pick up a new DVD player, or perhaps you need to contact the manufacturer of your DVD player and see if there is a firmware upgrade you can get for it.. in this day and age they change the way DVD's are authored so much some players do have a hard time playing discs from certain companies.. that's why if you look at say a DVD from Disney they always have a phone number on the back so you can contact them if you have a problem with playback.. that way they can get the info on your DVD player and contact the manufacturer so they can try to fix the problem with the way their players decode the DVD's that way future players from that company will work properly.. in some cases the players manufacturer will issue a firmware upgrade to correct the problem, if no firmware upgrade is available then they have no way to fix it.. your best bet.. get rid of it.. sell it off to someone.. by a Pioneer DVD player.. you'll never have another problem
Sorry for the rant but it's really annoying seeing posts from people who really are ignorant as to the way things are "supposed" to be, especially when they clearly have no clue what they are talking about.. and in the process their post is only really meant to try and bash a good company like Truckrflicks.
I found a way to temporarily "fix" Cheezy Flicks bungled aspect ratio. I always watch my widescreen DVDs on my computer. If I watch the DVD using Nero Showtime I go in the Menu to: Aspect Ratio> Settings> Force Aspect ratio... then enter in 16 X 9 and it fixes the warped aspect ratio and it's 2.35:1! I can't believe Cheezy Flicks could be selling such a defective product to the point where the image is squashed. I could probably rip the movie to my PC and re-author a DVD with the correct aspect ratio but I won't bother. The picture still isn't the best and the sound is mediocre.
