Bruce Dern should have won the best supporting oscar

for his performance in this movie. He was great. He should also have won the best acting performance for Black Sunday but he didn't even get nominated. You were robbed Bruce.

Bruce has been ripped off many times--his turn as a naturalist spaceman in Silent Running was unique and memorable, but garnered little attention at the Academy. So too with his rivetting characterization of the disaffected dirigible pilot in Black Sunday. Every picture he makes he is unforgettable, you can't get your eyes off him when he is on-screen, you can't get him out of your mind when he is off-screen.

I agree that Bruce Dern deserved the Oscar for this one, and so did Penelope Milford. I especially loved that scene where Vi starts dancing on the top of the kitchen table, starting to do a strip-tease in front of the guys she and Sally brought home with them from the bar. Actually, I thought Jane Fonda's performance (and I personally worship her) was the weakest of the four, but that was mainly because Sally was the one "normal" character, so she seemed to have downplayed her performance for the benefit of her co-stars.

This whole movie was robbed!!! I always thought DEER HUNTER was over-rated and this was the far superior film.

Totally agree. Dern was excellent. So believable, and it was a very sad and tragic character he portrayed in Coming Home. I to think he should have won the Best Supporting Actor, but as it has been said time and time again, the great ones always miss out!

I saw this post and just had to comment. I was born in 1985, so Coming Home (and Bruce Dern, really) are both way before my time, unfortunately. I am a huge fan of the HBO series, Big Love, and became a fan of Dern through that. I started renting his older stuff and came actross Coming Home. It's now one of my all time favorite movies. I think I've seen it over 10 times. I just love it. It's so real. The characters.. the situations.. the dialogue.. everything. They don't make movies like this anymore.

I can't believe he didn't win the Oscar for this either. He was spectacular. Even if he wasn't in it as much as Jane and Jon were, he was just as good.

christopher walken performance was far superior than his.he did not deserve the oscar

reply

I disagree I like Dern's performance but for me it had nothing on Walken's performance. Also I believe John Hurt had an excellent performance in Midnight Express. I would have given it too Hurt or Walken before Dern!

reply

He certainly delivered an Oscar.worthy performance, but remember that we was up against Christ. Walken with his performance in The Deer Hunter.. So no, Bruce Dern should not have won (which he obviously didn't..).

reply

Hey Christopher Walken did one Hell of a job in THE DEER HUNTER. If you haven't seen THE DEER HUNTER I strongly suggest you do so. Both of these films were the garganuans at the 1979 Academy Awards. BOth are real great films.

If he did not win one for his performance in the Incredible Two Headed Transplant, he was never winning one for Coming Home.

reply

Agreed. I actually did a project on PTSD and used a clip from the film. He was fabulous.

Bruce Dern is the man!!
