Jon Voight deserve the Oscar?
How many of you agree that Voight deserved the Oscar? I thought he was brilliant!!! He remains one of my favorites to this day.

shareI think he did. As an actor he gave a great portrait of many men in the end of the 60's who faced the obstacles of crippling because of that war. He Was ragous and yet extremely fragile, and scenes like the one with urine, the one when he ties himself to the gates, and the one who really made me cry my eyes out was the one with Billy who could'nt play his guitar, so he huged him so hard, feeling his pain, it was so beautiful.
shareOne of the best peformances of all-time, in my opinion.
The Squid and the Whale The Best Film of 2005
I just saw it on TEE VEE the other night. I don't think I moved a single muscle, I felt mezormized throught out the entire movie. As sar as Viet Nam movies go 1. Jon Voight (Coming Home) 2. Christopher Walkin (Deer Hunter)
THIS IS NOT HERE
I watch it every time it plays on HBO, et al. Love this movie. Had a brother who fought in 'Nam and died because of that war. He never really talked too much to me about it, but I knew how screwed up he was over it. I think this movie portrayed the feelings over the war and captured what this war was really all about and how it effected all of America. The sound track is incredible and brings back so many memories for me as well. Did Voight deserve an Oscar? Absolutely! A stunning performance.

Absolutely true.
I also just watched the film (I'm 39 years old and just getting around to watching it??). I thought Voight was brilliant in the role, and I think the soundtrack was absolutely perfect for the film.
I wonder if 10 years down the road the soldiers that fought in this current "war" will be going through the same things. Or if the "war" will even be over by then.
No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

In my opinion, he didn't. He's a teriffic actor, but he wasn't the best that year. 1978 was a year of "political correctness" in Hollywood and this film won far too many awards (in some categories, it didn't even deserve a nomination). Best Actress winner, Jane Fonda, was especially overrated in her role, as was the work done by the Director, Hal Ashby (it played more like a made-for-TV movie than a feature film).
Gary Busey in the Buddy Holly Story was probably the best actor that year, followed by Laurence Olivier in Boys From Brazil. Heck, even Warren Beatty's performance in Heaven Can Wait was as least as good as Voigt's.
And Robert De Niro's memorable performance in the Dear Hunter was better. I think Voigt came in 5th in a very strong field!

Oh Hell yeah!!. Sure he was pitted against Robert Deniro for his role in THE DEER HUNTER, whom was no slouch himself. However Voight's perfromace was just hands down brilliant. One of the best acting roles I've ever seen. His caracter trasformed from a bitter paraplegic veteran to a good man with a purpose to hold his head high. Through out the whole movie he was briliant, but at the end, that speech just sealed the bag, right then and there you knew he was going to get best actor. At that last speech he was very true and genuien to the role to the point where you began to believe that he himslef had been through the war. So yes he deserved the Academy Award for beat actor.
shareYes, he absolutely deserved it, I agree!
His speech at the end was 100% brilliant. So real. You'd have thought he was really there.
De Niro should have won hands down.
Voight was better in Midnight Cowboy and Deliverance than he was here.
No Voight didn't deserve an Oscar for this. I don't even feel he should have been nominated. I personally thought Brad Davis sould have been nominated for Midnight Express over Voight. Voight's best performance was in Conrack from 1974. He wasn't nominated for that so I guess this was a makeup call.
shareGood point about Brad Davis. It's unbelievable he didn't get nominated.
