Did Bob shoot himself ?

When Bob told his story about how he was hurt in Vietnam it almost sounded like he shot himself in the leg in order to get released. He also acted as though he wasn't comfortable talking about it.

So, did Bob shoot himself in order to get released from the army ?

reply

I think he shot himself on purpose. I also think he ended up committing suicide because he couldn't live with himself and all the horrendous things that had happened to him and that he had done. His wife having an affair was just enough to push him over the edge. Can you imagine how awful her life would have been if he hadn't gone for that swim??

how can anyone even sympathize with sally i dont get?she wanted love ,is love more important than commitment to her husband.hell i would not even have the courage to look someone in the eye if i am the cause for someone's death how negligible my part maybe because in my heart i would have known that if i had done my duty the person would have been alive
the movie is supposed to make us feel sorry for sally ,but most people dont realize to hold onto a commitment and doing one's duty is more difficult and more rarer and more tougher than been in love .
if we were more true to keeping our commitment to preserving our vows(by which i dont mean just marriage vows)than world would have been a better place than place full of hate and heartbreaks

Don't really feel inclined to feel bad for Jane Fonda's character in ANY situation.

no, i don't think he did. he shot himself by accident and was embrassed about it and so didn't want to talk about it. i think you missed the point to the end of the film- it shows how the husbands who went to war returned without a need in their familys. bob is being shown as an idot, to make you feel more for luke and sal, it leads you to want them to stay together.

Of course Bob shot himself. He wanted to come home and get away from the craziness in Vietnam. He was embarrassed because he ended up being awarded the bronze star for it, which is why he never wanted to discuss it. All he wanted was to get out, and he ended up getting rewarded for being dishonorable. Even Sally, who is sort of laughingly questioning him about the event, is pretty sure he did it to himself. And therein lies an amazing comparison to the two men, Bob and Luke. Luke, of course, was injured "honorably" and came home permanently physically disabled. Bob injured himself "dishonorably" and came home only temporarily physically disabled, but obviously permanently and fatally psychologically disabled.
