UNBELIEVABLE performances

Jane Fonda has never been better and Jon Voight is astonishing in this. He manages to be sexy, charismatic and yet deeply disturbed..and that monologue at the end! wow. Brilliant film, with some of the best acting on screen.

I disagree. It was one of her understated performances, and opposite Voights loud character, she had to be quieter in her acting but thats hardly the same as not having anything to do. The entire film is about her conflicting emotions for her husband and Jon Voight. Her acting in the scene where they're walking on the beach alone is exemplary - nuanced and understated.

Julia is probably her least impressive Oscar nominated performance, Redgrave stole the entire film.

I disagree. Fonda absolutely deserved the nomination but not a win. Her 2nd should have been for Horses or Julia but not this. I don't think that Redgrave stole the movie as you claim. This is Fonda`s finest hour as an actress plus she had to carry the entire movie as opposed to 3 scenes where Redgrave is absolutely phenomenal. If anyone in the film manages to outshine Jane, it's Jason Robards in his brilliant supporting turn as Dash.

Nope, completely disagree. Her 'finest hour' overall is undoubtedly her performance in Klute. I'm sure Fonda herself would agree.

Her least impressive Oscar nominated performances for me are Julia and On Golden Pond. In both films she was overshadowed.

And im not sure what your notion of 'having something to do is' i.e being in a lot of scenes doesn't necessarily mean it's a better performance or worthier of an award. Even though she had the most scenes in Julia, it was Robards, Streep and especially Redgrave's scenes that were most memorable.

Her performance in Coming Home is a quieter performance and less showy. You may interpret this as having nothing to do, but I saw everything on her face. Easily one of her best performances, along with They Shoot Horses and The Dollmaker for television.

She was much better in Klute, which pretty much stands as her career-defining role. Here, although largely good, I thought she was actually a good notch below Voight & Dern - there`s this element of woodenness in her acting which tended to surface time and time again (for instance, she was quite terrible in Julia).

I wouldn't agree about calling her performance in Julia wooden, infact her problem was the exact opposite, her portrayal of Lilian was quite camp, over-acting and crying in just about every other scene in in that film. But that is, for me, by far her weakest Oscar nominated performance.

Even though hey Shoot Horses was a great film, I don't consider her performance in that one of her strongest. The acting honors were for Sussanah York in that film.

Klute followed by Coming Home are her most inspired Oscar nominated performances and i completely see why they won.

I agree, but she gets overpraised based on being Fonda. "Understated" can also mean under-acting. Many actors (LIKE Raquel Welch) can show "everything" on their face, until they start speaking. Fonda does not have the depth people give her credit for. She was average on this very hyped film

You realize that "unbelievable" means not believable, right?

Voight is superb but this is not, I feel, one of Fonda's greatest performances. She was okay but I simply didn't find that Sally was a very interesting character and Fonda doesn't have enough to work with. I'd take Horses, Klute and Julia over this any day, all of them prime examples of what an immense talent she was during this period.
