Not sure how old you are, but yes, there was a time when cigarettes were given out to GIs in Red Cross packets, and seemingly everyone smoked.

Check out some films from the 40's, and even early 50's to get a real eye full (of smoke, that is). In some 40's films hardly a scene goes by without someone smoking.

Just check out just about any episode of "I Love Lucy". Lucy smoked. So did Ricky. Ditto Fred and Ethel. Hell, I think even the kid smoked !!

I did not see anyone making a comment about cigarettes being called fags in England. Either everyone know this or did not want to appear ignorant.
