Hard to believe that the man who brought us Atticus Finch would stoop so low and do this film/role. It has got to be his worst. Even funnier is the fact he was nominated for a golden Globe for this role!
Best part ... "that infernal jew" ...with fists clutching the side of his head.
So he sold you guys with the "that infernal jew" ... with fists clutching the side of his head ... performance. Me ... I just let out a 60 second groan.
Nevertheless ... which GP performances do you think where worse?
Well done ... I am humbled ... although those are rankings of GP films not GP performances. Perhaps I am alone in my assessment ... but I will says this ... I thought he was much better in Scarlet & Black and The Omen which are lower in the list.
You certainly aren't alone. As I say, I was expecting to cringe based on some of the vocal complaints I read about his performance. Perhaps my lowered expectations let me appreciate it more. I was pleasantly surprised.
PS: Perhaps a more apt description would be "Most Polarizing Gregory Peck Role Ever"?
I agree with you, Chrisso. I just rewatched this for the first time in 25 years. It hasn't aged well, but what really shocked me was how hammy Gregory Peck's performance was. It's almost comical. No, not almost. It is comical.
I dont know much about Gregory Peck as an actor, the only thing Ive seen him in was the original 'The Omen, in 1976'. He was a 'goodie' in that film and he struck me as always being a good character actor rather than a bad one.
But as for his role here as the appalling Dr Mengele character, he made me believe in him as a 'baddie' and it made me enjoy his death by the viscious dogs all the more actually.
You MUST watch ar least 10 movies with Gregory Peck! It's Gregory Peck - one of the best actors of his time, so he was acting in the best movies of that time, working with best directors...
