Basil Poledouris's Main Title cue seems to me to include an allusion to a theme from an epic film score by Max Steiner (the sea being the significant link). Any one have an idea what film I'm thinking of?

I also heard echos in the score to parts of THE SEARCHERS score, specifically bits of the theme that plays for Martha and Ethan's moments together. But I'm no musicologist, and I'd have to watch both films closely to point out where it gets used in BW. Milius praises Basil as being the one of film school generation (Caleb, Marty, Francis, etc) who was talented frm the beginning, unlike the others who had to learn their craft as they went along. A lot of this film's power comes from the score - there are lengthy sequences with surfing footage set to music and a poor score would have sunk this completely.
