Impressed by the surfing ability of the actors

This couldn't have been just special effects, espeically in 1978. Both Katt and Vincent (at least) appear to have been very good surfers.

Probably grew up surfing -- couldn't have learned this quickly for just the movie.

I believe they knew how but had to get a little better for the movie. They did do great!
