I'm not sure it was ever mentioned, though I've had a couple of suspitions...the team colors orange and navy could mean the name is Tigers or perhaps Wildcats--The Carver High newspaper was said to be The Sentinel (see "On The Line") and often school newspapers share their name with the sports mascot--In "Mainstream" a mascots costume was depicted as a peanut, though that would be an unusual nickname, the peanut mascot could be more of a reference to the school's namesake George Washington Carver...
