Maybe Albert Hodges had something...

Albert Hodges accused Reeves of being racist...two instances where maybe he was right:

(1) "Sudden Death" - when Randy came to give the coach the news that his folks won't let him play because they worried he might get hurt, Reeves gives ways Randy could get hurt..."...driving a car, on the bus, eatin' chicken. Your mom let's you eat chicken, doesn't she?"

(2) "Pregnant Pause" - says to Sybil, "only if you promise to stop calling me Mr. Reeves. A simple "Massa" will do..."

The "massa" line was simply an edgy joke, trying to bait Sybil. Eating chicken likewise had nothing to do with race.

On the other hand, several of the black players made comments like, "you got good taste for a white guy", "leave it to the white boy to be a dope", "is this dog trained? Absolutely, he only bites white people", "how'd you hit that ball so far? Easy, it's white", etc. When Goldstein admires Coolidge's new shoes, Coolidge tells him he wouldn't look good in them because he's white. On the other hand, in another episode, Goldstein tells Salami that several of the team members have a future in working at a car wash, then names all the black players.

Had some of the white jokes been turned around and told on blacks, the show would probably have been yanked off the air. As it was, it was a look at a mix of races and how they all were there for each other when it really mattered.
