Was this show good?

I've never heard of this program, but I enjoyed all the Star Treks and sci-fi stuff in general like Fringe and Star Wars and BSG.

Would I like this?

Is it worth getting my hands on?

Cool thanks!

Deep Roy was in a couple episodes? And Brian Blessed!

I see Youtube has some episodes. Looks like The Way Back is first. I'll take a look.

If you can make it through the first four episodes, then you'll love it. It's that awesome (and I don't use that word lightly). :)

reply

Ok thanks.

After watching episode 2 it seems like we are never to be shown what became of Tel and Maja Varon. I guess they are dead then. I was hoping they'd be regulars. That they'd continue their investigation trying to prove Blake innocent. Oh well.

I like the show well enough. It's kind of annoying when the camera cuts the lower half of peoples faces off and altered dialog is overdubbed. Hopefully they stop doing that at some point.

On to episode 3 soon.

Really? I didn't know that!

Thanks I appreciate it. I will avoid any and all spoilers if I can help it.

"You nearly won, Blake. If you only had the guts."

"I'll have yours!"

lol Or something like that. I thought that was a good scene.

I've just started rewatching it. Ignore the dodgy sets, silly costumes, and BBC standard effects, and enjoy one of the best sci fi shows ever.

I just finished season 1!

Yes the sets, costumes, stunts, and effects were quite terrible, even by 1978 standards. There was finally a halfway decent shot of The Liberator in orbit around Aristo. I wonder if the people involved in this show had much, if any, experience working in television before. But the show has an unexplainable charm to it. And the opening theme music has a sense of familiarity to it... I know! In the older Oscar telecasts! When they'd introduce a presenter! "Presenting the Best Actress award, please welcome... Teri Garr!" Bum bum bummm bah-bum...  Right?

As for the season 1 finale, we met the most terrifying, bloodthirsty creatures ever to grace a television screen...the phibians! lol

Obviously the ship and crew cannot have been destroyed so I'm going with... it was a future image shown by Orac. That must be it.

Anyways I'll know soon. On to season 2!

Much like Dr Who, the B7 effects department had very little time and money to produce quality stuff, but they were inventive.
I look at the effects as not so much as rubbish, but clever, with the sources they had to work with.

There's an amusing anecdote by the executive producer of the show that the BBC originally wanted the entire first season to be budgeted at 10,000 pounds. He spent the entire budget on the first episode to demonstrate to them just how ridiculous such a budget was.

-There is no such word as "alot."

Unfortunately sci in Britain was considered for kids. There just wasn't the money available for sophisticated effects and sets.
Even now, Doctor Who,one of the BBC'S biggest moneymakers is still a budget show (there's been a big budget cut since series 5). British sci fi has always had to put script and characters over effects.
So the sets are made of balsa wood, and they always teleport into the same bit of woodland or quarry, enjoy the storytelling.

I've just finished the complete run of 52 episodes, and loved it. I can't think of another sci fi show where the heros lose most of the time. One of the finest shows ever.

reply

I still think so after 30 years of viewing the repeats!

As a old sci fi fan, I've become increasingly bored with modern sci fI tv. The last really great show for ne was the rebooted Battlestar Galactica (and before that, Babylon 5).
Shows like B7,classic Who,The Prisoner, and less remembered stuff like The Omega Factor, Quatermass, The One Game, just seem to push the boundaries.

I just watched Sarcophagus and Ultraworld. Think I'll skip Moloch and go right to the season 3 finale Death-Watch.

reply

Terminal is the series 3 finale, but Death Watch is a cracking episode.

reply

Oh thanks.

It looks like both those episodes are rated very high.

reply

No need to skip Moloch. It's not the greatest but it does have Vila and Servalan teaming up! Also a real serious dust up between Tarrant and Vila.

reply

In "City At The Edge Of The World," Avon and Cally thought Tarrant might be killed by Vila after bullying him into going down to a planet to deal with "Bayban the Berserker!"
