Who were they?

The trivia section for this film says that the lovely Peter Cushing was the third choice to play Wilbur Gray...so can anyone tell me who were the first two choices?

It's probably not true, because the other two aren't named.

You must be right. Besides I can't believe that Peter Cushing would have been third choice for anything!

Christopher Lee and Vincent Price were both asked to play Wilbur Gray.

Thanks for that. That's interesting. Two very different actors in their own way. I wonder what the character would have been like if either of them portrayed him. Can you tell me how you know this? Was it in an article or an interview with Lee or Price or someone who was involved with the film?

It was in Amicus by Allan Byrce and a least a number of other books.

Strange but true: for the 1968 SHERLOCK HOLMES tv series, Cushing was 3rd choice, after Douglas Wilmer (who'd done the previous 1965 series and didn't want to come back), and John Neville (who'd starred in A STUDY IN TERROR, not sure if he wasn't available or what).

Myself, I think it's nice that Cushing was able to finally do Holmes again, after plans for a 2nd Hammer film with him were cancelled. (Then he returned again much later for THE MASKS OF DEATH.)
