This schlocky trilogy (with a surprisingly good cast) has been a guilty pleasure of mine for years. It has always bothered me though that the three, uncanny unsolved mysteries were presented as proof that cats are devilish creatures when in all cases humans were the evil parties. The cats only attacked or killed to protect or avenge their owners. The real message of these films is that no creature is more loyal or protective than a cat.

So the cats are shown looking evil and calculating.. but they are righting wrongs and punishing evil doers.
Ok, you could argue this is vigilante justice - summonary execution.. and that is true, and I hope not many would actually (in the real, non film world) support such lynch law. But - within the context of such films - no more evil than many other simular tales of revenge in other portmantau films of the era.... where a mysterious stranger - man on a train, antique shop owner, crypt keeper,lift operator or even some 'ancient mystical artifact' exacts rough justice.

I agree with you. The cats weren't evil whatsoever. It was the people who were the evil ones. The cats fought for what was right and everyone whose death they caused, with the exception of Wilbur, deserved what they got, frankly. This is one of my favorite films as well. Anthology films are one of my favorite types of horror and this is an excellent of one.

Vengeful beings are always thought to be malign. But the cat's revenge in the film is understandable. The cats were doing the job that they have always been employed to do. That is to keep down vermin. The human vermin portrayed in the film got their come-uppance quite justly.
shareI never thought of it that way but that's quite an interesting perspective. The humans were horrible people like diseased filled rats the cats desperately needed to hunt.

The trouble is that cats just aren't scary. It was the biggest mistake that Roger Corman made in his films. HE might not have liked cats but he was on his own. It's the same in The Uncanny. Most of the evil cats are just standing around mooching like cats always do. Very non-scary.
