SUSPIRIA released on this day

Released on this day--1 Feb.--in 1977, Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA. Argento is one of the towering figures of horror cinema, a master of bloody, visually stunning cinematic nightmares and this is one of his masterpieces, one of the greatest horror movies ever made, a beautiful, sensory-enveloping dream-stew of witches, sensual Technicolor, auditory integration with viewers' central nervous systems.

SUSPIRIA's reputation took a hit early in the digital era, when a series of releases featuring extensive tampering with the film's all-important audio (Anchor Bay and Blue Underground, I'm looking at you) led some of the kids encountering it for the first time to consign it, in the face of its impressive reputation, to the Overrated pile but--after far too many years--it now seems to be on the mend.

One of the best horror films I've ever seen. I saw it in the theater when it came out and it scared all of us. I've seen it many times because it's done so well. To me it's timeless horror, Argento's absolute best.
