Owen and Beru before the Prequels

Before the Prequel Trilogy established what the relationship is between Anakin and Owen and Beru, what did fans think was the connection between Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru and Anakin since the only information at the time was that Anakin turned into Darth Vader and that Luke was their nephew. Makes me wonder too if Owen or Beru originally had a greater role in the backstory of Star Wars. Also it is interesting that they have the last name Lars and not Skywalker, and without the context of the prequel trilogy, one would assume then that Aunt Beru had the maiden name of Skywalker and she was Anakin’s sister

In one of the novelizations, Ben says that Owen is his brother.

That’s an interesting connection. Wonder how that explanation would have worked

I had a similar idea re Anakin and Beru here:-

Really though I think anything would have worked better than the botched step relatives thing we got in the prequels, which don't match up with that Obi-Wan line saying Uncle Owen thought Anakin should have stayed on Tatooine and not got involved...

At the very least you certainly get the impression they had a more involved history with Anakin; Owen in particular possibly being a close friend in their youth and being resentful of Anakin's decision to pass on the simple life and devote himself to the Jedi, thus getting involved in the clone wars, followed by the events which led to his "death". He seems to harbor a similar resentment to "that crazy old man" Obi-Wan, most likely casting a certain level of blame for what happened to Anakin and disparaging him so Luke would not associate for fear of similar circumstances repeating.
