Awful Movie

Watched this at the weekend and was very disappointed. Extremely interesting true story, but a very poor movie.

My chief complaint is that, not for one minute, did I believe anything in the movie. The actors were too old for their parts when they were students (even Robert Redford was almost totally convincing as a college student in The Way We Were) and to me the movie went downhill from there. This was World War II in occupied Europe yet these guys were having a total romp through history. Even when they were arrested and supposedly tortured, I didn't believe it for one second.

And don't get me started on the absurd RAF scenes. I'm British and it was just too painful to watch their antics. All in all, an awful movie.

I'm sorry that your taste in film has not been aged well enough.

I agree. I rated it 3/10. It was like later Verhoeven, minus the satire. Definitely not as good as the similar Black Book (which I wasn't exactly in love with, either)

I believe it was then not unusual to be older as you had to work first to get the money to study. Late twenties was common. As hauer was 32 or so, it is not strange. Also, the first years of the war, the Germans did not commit many attrocities in Holland, they mainly just occupied it. Which may explain the naivity of the group. Besides the movie was based on the biography of the real Soldier of Orange.

Just occupied it?

reply

Well as far as occupation can be peaceful. But in the first few years, life went on more or less the same.
