Accordinfg to the Carlson brothers, who the Hansons are patterened after, they really did play with toys a lot. The Carlsons shared a house during the Johnstown Jets season with Dave "Killer" Hanson (called Killer Carlson in the film), and they had a race car set they they played with all the time.

Whenever I see a hockey player wearing thick glasses I think of the Hanson Brothers.
