the scene where the Hansons climed the glass and went after a fan

has it ever occured to anyone here that it could've been the inspiration for what the boston bruins did in a game against the new york rangers at msg in 1979
with Mike Milbury and 2 other players when a fan threw a rolled up program at one of the players. Similar thing happened in the movie when a fan threw a tire chain at one of the Hansons and they went after him in the stands I wonder if that inspired what the bruin players did since slapshot came out in 77 and that incident with the bruins took place in 79 anyone here who nows there nhl history knows what I'm talking about

I'm sure that happened but I remember a game in 70 where several players from the St. Louis Blues went over the boards and started fighting with the crowd in Philadelphia AFTER a bench emptying brawl in the second period!!! It got so out of control the refs cancelled the rest of the game.

martian, i need to correct you. the game you are referencing occurred in 1972. there was no brawl that precipitated the incident, but a penalty call with seconds left in the second period that the blues objected to. as the period ended and the blues were skating off of the ice, a fan poured beer on blue's defenseman al arbour's head and his teammates headed up into the stands and the fight was on.

also, the refs did not cancel the game, the third period was played, and was somewhat uneventful, except for claims after the game that the blues players were firing pucks into the stands in an attempt to injure flyers fans....and remember, the glass around the ice was much lower in those days.

finally, there are countless examples of players going into the stands-i'm sure the slapshot producers were very familiar with the concept, as were the bruins at MSG in 1979.

speaking of which Mike Milbury now is facing charges for allegedly going after a 12 year old player who I guess taunted his son and he was absent at the last hockey nigh in canada broadcast which he is an analyst there. And the msg incident in 1979 he beat a fan with a shoe

My father and I were actually at that game in 79 when the Bruins went up into the crowd on the other side of the rink from where we were sitting.

lol I was 12 at the time and I still remember wishing the crowd would beat them up.

Thanks! I was pretty young and I remember it was televised in St. Louis and they didn't show the third period.

also the GM being completely inept and a tool inspired Mike Milbury as well.

It happend well after the movie, and in a different sport, but Ron Artest did in Detroit.

My husband said the Rangers had a similar incident with a player named Hatfield in the 60s.

I remember when the Flyers went on a western road trip during the heyday of the Broad Street Bullies and got into some legal trouble when Don Saleski and another teammate or two went into the Vancouver stands. A similar incident occurred in Los Angeles. My memory says it was the same road trip but that was too many beers and a few concussions ago.....

This actually happened in Utica New York and the Carlson brothers were involved. The three brothers were skating for Johnstown and were very much like the Hansons portrayed in the movie.

Was that the incident where the fans threw all those chairs out on to the ice? I remember hearing about Utica and how they had all these portable folding chairs set up, and the fans were upset about something and started throwing the chairs.

3-1/2 years, 10 replies, and nobody has pointed out that the fan threw a set of keys on a keychain - not a tire chain (the 'tire chain' comment is made by Reggie to the cops as justification for the incident ?

Tsk, tsk... where are all the nitpickers on this board?

I've seen it happen at least three times that I can remember. In the old IHL in the 70s, some players for Kalamazoo tried to go up into the stands in Dayton. In Wichita in the second CHL, players from Tulsa actually did make it into the stands to confront Wichita fans (and a couple Wichita fans made it to the ice to take on Tulsa players). In the same league and same era in Tulsa, some Tulsa fans were throwing things at a Wichita player in the penalty box, who then tried to go after them, but was stopped by a cop (who wasn't stopping the fans throwing things on him).
