Hey people! How you all doing? I just wanted to write a quick mesage on why I really loved Shock Waves and still do even though I'm older now then when I first saw it when I was a kid. Does anyone remember Son of Sevengoolie? He was this tv show host would play old horror moves late at night on Saturdays and during commercial breaks he would interview someone from the movie or just have someone from his station talk about what they liked or dilsiked about it . He was kind of tounge and cheek with lots of bad jokes and chessy set designs. I can remember watching besides Shock Waves classics like Beware the Blob-the second ruled over the first, Blackula, Deathmaster, Don't be afraid of the dark on his program. Man what a crappy sad live I'm made so far!
So anyway what made Shock Waves a true horror classic like its relatives the first Halloween, Rosemarys Baby, Jaws, the Exorcist and Texas Chainsaw is that it doesn't have to use gross blood spattering and disugusting acts to scare you. Just the use of cool innovative camera angles, scarey errie music and making real life characters who you are following the story with and wonder if you would do the same things they would given the situation. Shock waves is really more along the lines of the crazy individual-or SS zombie story that goes with Halloween then the Exorcist or Rosemary which deals with the occult. There similarities with Halloween and Shock you see often see the killers point of view as he walks around or the vicitims as you wonder what will happen when they leave somewhere a dark room or walking up stairs. The scariest thing about Shock Waves is that the way they filmed the zombies just walking around with creepy music in the background either goosestepping the island or tearing the hotel apart. There was just this evil vibe you got from them that they were unfeeling no emotion monsters who just did what they were programed to do protect guard their surroundings and wipe any enemies that cross their path. There didn't have to be any gross blood or excessive violence to show how frightning these zombies just the way they would sneak up behind someone and take them down fast and sharp was enough to give you the willies! Man when I was a kid this kept me up for a few nights the first few times I watched it! Ha I remember I wanted to buy a Shock Waves lunchbox for school or see if there zombie action figures! Guess I got tired of Superman and Star Wars! I don't even remember many kids seeing Shock Waves when I would tell them about it. Hell it never got the recognition Halloween, Jaws or the Exorcist got.
So now just a few things that did show Shock Waves was with some plot holes now that I'm older and did bring the movie down just few inches nothing big. Hey this director really tried to make a crazy somewhat silly plot and made you scared stiff at times so for that I'm not that critcial about it. First off we are made to believe that some old German warship from WW2 just coasted into US water and no coast guard would never notice it! Come on it was'nt that far off the Florida coast someone at some point would have had to notice it and call the coat guard. For some 30 years not one person had ever noticed it hell some other country in Europe that's just pushing it. Also there is no explanation about why would there be a deserted island not far from off Florida with some big totally deserted hotel. You mean tell me some small island in the states would just pack up and totally leave and let a beautiful glamorous hotel to waste. At the very least there would still Americans on it to make sure everything would be okay and if someone would get shipwrecked that they could rescue them. I don't know should have been more on the story of how the island got to be that way.
Next what was it that brought the zombies off their ship. It was never explained you just had to second guess it. Come on for 30 some yrs these soliders never once thought to walk off and see what's around besides looking at the botom of a rusted old ship! What the hell were they doing playing cards! My guess is and you can tell me if my theory works or not is they were just sleeping Cushing gave them some of kind of drug so they wouldn't try and take over the ship when he left which basically they'd be in hibernation. When that sun eclipse or whatever it was shines down at the bottom of the ship somehow or another it wakes up one of them which is the first pov shot at the bottom of the ship the solider slowly walking around getting used to his new surroundings. It takes about a day to get around the ship and finally he finds the exit soon and starts exploring the ocean. Then he bobs up and sees the island goes to it check it out and is programmed to think this our new area to protect and guard keep and eye for intruders then walks back to the ocean and ship to wake his zombie buddies and say "hey guys no more sleeping on rusty gross beds there is a island nearby with a beutiful woman skinny dipping in a yellow bikini"! Gurading the island comes second! The next day Rose was going to make some new friends!
Next was why were the zombies so pissed off and angry a lot? The scenes of them trashing the hotel were scarey and creepy but I though they weren't supposed to have emotions yet here they were breaking tables and smashing glasses to bits. They were supposed to guard the island and watch out for intruders. I never got any of the destruction hotel stuff. Hell guess being asleep for so many yrs and waking anyone would be a little cranky! They did see Rose in her bikini that should have puet them in a beter mood-def would have put me in one! It was probably just their old commander he could have at least made them a pot of coffee for their homecoming! Shame on him not a very nice thoughful nazi leader!
Next was the usual victims do the dumbest things while they are pursued by the villans. Why did Chuck after he fell in the pool gets out and see a zombie slowly coming towards him. What does he do? Goes back in the pool where another zombie is coming after him. He pushes him out of the way and then gets trapped in the pool! If I were Chuck I would have either ran in the other direction while I was out of the pool away from the zombie who wasn't in the pool or threw the flaslight at his face or groin either way he would been in some pain then just rip is gogoles right off then hauled ass! No way would I go back to the pool where I would trapping myself. He was a sitting duck as soon as he went back in. Same thing with Norman if I was going back to the hotel and I knew these things could hide under water no one way would I be goig near any pond or marsh at least you could see them on land and run. How would get away if you were in deep water? Poor Bev though I felt bad for her she was blind so there was no way she would make it. Hey did you guys notice the zombie that killed her had no goggles on thought they could't survive without them that must have been a mistake Wiederhorn never caught or maybe he did over the years and hoped no would notice. What a way to go for old Bev gets drowned in the fish tank! Oh well at least the fish could have somethings to nibble on don't think the zombies would be taking care of them! They better learn to make coffee first!
And finally my last question confused issue was why was Rose sparred? When Keith and Rose made it to the boat and start paddling out to sea the first zombie that pops out grabs the paddle keith uses to defend himslef and throws him in the water. How he gets away from the zombie I have no idea but when the zombie comes up first looking for him Keith just suddenly jumps behind him and gets his goggles off! He kicked major zombie ass! Yeah high five Keith make those nazi zombies work for their killings! I remember when I first saw this part I thought oh man they are going to make it he saved the day. But then a other zombie comes up only this one I think watched Keith in action before and thought "hey this guy isn't afraid to fight he kicked one of my patrols ass I'm going to have to be a little more sneaky and cunning when getting him". He reaches up and quickly grabs Keith off guard and takes him under and most likely just drowns chokes him to death. Poor Keith he had one good match against the zombies! So why did that zombie let Rose go he had to have seen her on the boat or heard her crying. Why did he just let the boat go? My guess was maybe at that point it got to far out to sea and he figured it was time to go back to patrolling the island doing the marching and keeping guard for intruders. Man If I had been Rose I would been so scared to death figuring I would be next! I would have had that paddle in my hand ready to hit anyone over the head who would come up under the water! Oh well just never got why she was spared, maybe because she had a yellw bikini!
Hey I hope you guys all liked my message here. I think I made some good points on why I really liked and respect this film even thogh now there a few things that bring it down just a little but nothing extreme. I did throw some jokes in now and then just to keep things fun but in no way try to demean or cut the film down. I would do that with any film I was reviewing. No film is wthout flaws. I would put Shock Waves just under Hallowwen, Jaws, the Exorcist, Rosemarys baby and Texas Chainsaw . It is a horror classic that you could pretty much let a kid watch I mean it's not as rough edged as the Exorcist or Texas Chainsaw . They should do a remake I wonder how it would work hopefully not as bad as other remakes I have seen like the Fog,House of Wax-made me want to throw up or even the new Halloween truley sad! Hopefully they would make some changes to it so it's not just like watching the orginal but still keep it scarey as hell like the old one. Kind of like Peter Jacksons King Kong. Oh well hope you all liked my message and feel freely to respond when you get the chance. Just stay away from the damn pool and ponds people! The Toden core are wating to give you some nazi zombie tough love! Laters
