Saw it at the drive-in Saturday night!
"Shock Waves" was the final feature this year at the Drive-In Super Monster-Rama, an annual festival presented at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, PA. I am crazy about this weird movie and it was the one I was most looking forward to seeing on the giant screen. The festival this year featured Peter Cushing films, and it was pretty amazing.
Sometimes the prints shown at the festival carry alternate titles, and I was hoping to see a title screen of "Almost Human". Alas, it was the original title screen. The print was a little pink, as many of these old 35mm prints are, but that didn't bother me in the least. "Shock Waves" started around 2:45am, which is a great time to see it, as I've always felt this movie was very dreamlike. A lot of cars still remained to watch it, which is a little unusual for these festivals--many of the folks can't last the entire four films.
I could be wrong, since I was 7 years old when this movie debuted, but I was a huge horror fan even at that age and I used to scour the newspaper ads to see what horror movies were playing in the local drive-ins and theaters. I don't think "Shock Waves" actually played locally because it was not on my radar until the mid 80s when I saw it on home video.
Below is the full review of "Shock Waves" I posted on my blog several years ago, if you care to read my obsessive ramblings about it.
