what happens at beginning?

So when they are first on the boat, they mention something weird going on with the sun, and they they cut to some sunken vessels. Then the passengers were like "what's going on? Why won't the captain tell us what wrong?" What really WAS wrong? They hadn't smashed into the ghost ship yet. They just looked at the sun and everyone knew something was wrong?

iirc that scene was cut short..it was supposed to be an underwater disturbance where something breaks the surface and the corpse of a long dead sailor or nazi lashed to something floats by.

I can't find the dvd right now but it was in the commentary.

A scene preceding the one mentioned was deleted. In it, they come upon some floating debris in the dead of night. With the spot light illuminating the debris, Luke dives into the water, swims over and grabs what appears to be a broken sailboat mast. It rotates, revealing a skeleton dressed in rain gear lashed to the mast. A good scare but cut for timing.

I assumed it was the ship broke up & partly resurfaced since Cushing wasn't expecting it to be there. The sun thing, who knows? The timing was right for the zombie resurrection? An omen of doom? Not a film that made much sense, the commentary calls it "dream-like."
