6.8 rating? WTF?

This movie should be a 10, this movie is a classic. Amazes me how much hate this movie has gotten, even when it was up for an Oscar Richard Dreyfuss won over Travolta for Goodbye girl. Give me a break.

I was surprised by the score at first, because it is such a classic...but honestly, there are chunks of this movie that are clunky and awkward as fvck. I gave it a 7.

Watch it again, when you're stoned and can really concentrate, and you'll see so much subtlety and realism in the acting in this film that you'll increase that rating to ten.

This really is one of the greatest films ever made. John Travolta's performance and dancing is spectacular. Few performances in history are as good as this. This film is better than "the Godfather" in my book, and I would rate only "Taxi Driver" higher in a list of "Best 1970s films." It is a totally realistic film with lots of music and dancing, it is not a musical. It is both hilarious and tragic with lots of classic lines of dialogue. It's edited in the most intense fashion. Plus it's the ultimate macho guys-hanging-out/high-testosterone film of all, testosterone which is channeled and expressed in not just pantomimes of violence and bravado, but also onto the holy dance floor of raging and youthful art. Oh, and last but not least, the Bee-Gees-dominated soundtrack is incredible, every last song a classic. This film is the ultimate ode to the unconquerable energy of youth.

Hehe, I only watch TV shows and movies while high if I think it'll make them more enjoyable. SNF is enjoyable enough on its own. It's just very rough around the edges in terms of editing and some of the acting. I'm okay with my sober score 

"Sober" applies to toxic puke-inducing drugs like alcohol, not anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic herbs like Sweet Leaf. Without being able to relax, there is no such thing as balance, and without balance there is no such thing as a successful "dance" or knowing-of-ledges (knowledge) of any kind, including the deeper understanding that translates into getting the most out of cinematic works of art. TV shows, even the best ones like Sopranos and whatnot, are mediocre at best, compared to films like "Saturday Night Fever," "Taxi Driver." John Travolta's performance in this film is as good as any performance De Niro or Pacino ever did and beyond, regardless of what a prostitute he has turned into in recent years. De Niro has turned into a hooker too, so hardly anyone from the 1970s is still doing that level of work.

Artistically speaking, the best movies of today are NOTHING, absolute amateur hour, regardless of how much money and hi-tech crap is spent on them, compared to the best films of the 1970s. And so "politically correct," weak, phony and unrealistic, it's laughable. Nowadays they are about 90% propaganda, 10% art if you're lucky, whereas in the 1970s the ratio of brainwashing propaganda to t-root mining art was 60/40 in favor of art. "Saturday Night Fever" was done as a labor of love and as "art." Everyone involved, including Travolta and the Bee Gees, were completely surprised at the level of popularity and the iconic status it achieved in such a short period of time. This film did not start "the Disco craze" by any means, it just re-kindled a craze that was in its waning days for a few more years and by around 1981, old-school funk-based Disco was already "dead" and post-punk New-Wave had taken over the dance clubs.

“The art of living is based on rhythm — on give and take, ebb and flow, light and dark, life and death. By acceptance of all aspects of life, good and bad, right and wrong, yours and mine, the static, defensive life, which is what most people are cursed with, is converted into a dance, ‘the dance of life,’ metamorphosis.

One can dance to sorrow or to joy; one can even dance abstractly. But the point is that, by the mere act of dancing, the elements which compose it are transformed; the dance is an end in itself, just like life. The acceptance of the situation, any situation, brings about a flow, a rhythmic impulse towards self-expression.

To relax is, of course, the first thing a dancer has to learn. It is also the first thing a patient has to learn when he confronts the analyst. It is the first thing any one has to learn in order to live. It is extremely difficult, because it means surrender, full surrender.” - Henry Miller

Great name! Lol. But I disagree this movie is nothing short of a masterpiece. The cinematography, acting, music and feelings that it evoke are what movies are all about!

I gave it a 9. It is a classic.

reasons-
1- period piece...very much a time capsule
2- script by Wexler...so many classic lines...very authentic and gritty
3- Brooklyn circa 1977...that era in NYC is now considered important and this film captured the look and sounds amazingly well
4- Travolta...one of the greatest lead debuts in movie history
5- story...how does one transcend an environment?...imprisonment of friends and family and class...
6- music was and is outstanding

Couldn't agree more. This movie is like fine wine.
