What was the point of this movie?

Other than to play and dance to disco music... what was the point? There didn't seem to be any kind of plot. Just kind of an aimless movie. The only thing I got from the movie is that John Travolta's character matures a little bit by the end of it.

For me, it gets better as time passes. The movie used 'real' locations such as the dance studio and a disco the characters in the movie could afford to go to.

Any of us that ever went to a dicso and danced, we always wanted to look good, dance well, and get the girl.

Tony as portrayed did just that.

Next to disco dancing, it's a love story.

I agree with you jmusacha, if all anyone got out of this movie was disco dancing they weren't paying attention.

Brilliant film and it does get better with each viewing!

Yes it does, my friends and i saw this movie every week at the movies when we were teenagers but we went for the dancing and paid no attention to the story, 36 years later i saw it at the video store and rented it for old times sake, i was amazed at how great a movie it is much better than i remember. J ohn Travolta's performance is sublime and he deserved his academy nomination. Straight after watching it i went out and bought my own copy

Cableguy88 let me give you my take on this movie, it can be summed up in the opening 2 minutes. The song Staying alive tells Tony's story. The lyrics "life going nowhere, somebody help me" say it all. Tony's life is going nowhere, he works in a dead end job if he stays there for 20 years he'll still be doing the same thing he did on his first day, there's no room to advance. His parents think he's a waste of space, his older brother is their pride and joy and his sister is the baby of the family and the only girl, the father gives her a hug and kiss on the cheek when she is clearing the table, something he probably never did to Tony. Tony has such low expectations for himself that he is pleased when his boss gives him a small raise, it's the only time he's ever received any praise in his life besides dancing. Then he meets Stephanie, she does help him, she started in the same place he did but she has ambition, she's moving out of Brooklyn, she has a job where she can work her way up, she's taking courses at night, she helps him to see there is more to life. Tonys friends are douchebags and Tony is too but he also has some good qualities, he's honest and he has integrity, he won't take a trophy he didn't deserve. Try watching it again keeping these things in mind and maybe you'll enjoy it more, i would be interested to know what you think.

Why must every movie have a point? How about just being entertaining on a basic level without teaching some sort of life lesson?
Entertainment just for the sake of pleasing the masses can be honorable too which this movie surely is.

I think Tony realized by the end he didn't have to live his whole life as an urban redneck! A term I use for many ethnic working classes in big cities of the Northeast and Midwest.

Or maybe it was an excuse to make The Bee Gees even bigger stars! But David Shire's instrumental hits should have made the top 40 as well!

I always thought Saturday Night Fever capsulated Disco's peak which to an extent it did. However Saturday Night Fever showed Disco's shallowness which will eventually lead to nowhere.

That not being prepared in life by just blowing your money on partying is going to screw you in the end.

OP: Christ, you're stupid. Stick to Adam Sandler flicks or Disney movies or whatever films don't baffle you.

Saw this for the first time last night on Netflix. Though I liked the dynamic between Tony's family and his friend who begs for advice, that's all there is outside of the dancing and songs. I found too many of the situations building contempt for characters. I used to work in a video store that rented the PG version, to which I can't imagine this being edited down to PG.

It is a coming of age film.

It is a coming of age film.

I thought the message was the opposite, and more hopeless - that there is no 'coming of age'. Travolta's character busted his ass at work, but still had to live with his parents. The only thing he had to defend his pride was dancing, and his image and physical appearance which he could use to get girls.

In the movie he realizes that isn't what he wants though; he wants a girl who is different, hard to get, and will ultimately show him a path to getting out of the life he's stuck in.
