World Trade Center

I get chills everytime I see it in this movie probably more than any other background with How deep is your love playing. It's still sad.

reply

I know I feel the same way. Who would have known that 24 years after this movie was made, those towers were gonna come tunbling down....

Well the images of 9/11 are still fresh. Superman II has the WTC in some of its shots. So does DVD's of the TV show Friends.

reply

Well they can't be that fresh if they're letting them build a masque nearby.

"Masque" - pissing in my pants!!!

I think someone mentioned Godspell. In that scene they're all dancing on the roof of one of the towers, singing 'It's All For The Best'.

Three Days of the Condor is a good one. Not only are there some great shots of the towers in the skyline, at least one scene takes place inside the WTC in an office near the top floors, I think. It was probably shot on a studio set of course, but the view from the window is pretty convincing from what I recall.

reply

Three Days is a fabulous film that I haven't seen in ages.

I've seen a few movies here and there with shots of the WTC. It's kind of tough to see it knowing, of course, its fate but I don't think it should be edited out or anything like that.

BTW, in another case of fateful doom, there is a movie called Here Comes the Navy (1934). Interestingly, the film stars Gloria Stuart (1910-2010) who played "Old Rose" in Titanic (1997). Scenes in the movie take place on the deck of the USS Arizona. Seven years later, on December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, that ship would be blown apart and most of its crew killed in the attack by the Japanese Naval Air Force.

You could say the same with Godspell, Wall Street, Home Alone 2, Moonstruck.

The world trade center was in the back ground of a lot New York films, ghostbusters and teenage mutant turtiles come to mind. Personal it doesn't effect me, but I have no conection with NYC. And it's not a freakin mosque, and it not at ground zero!

In my opinion know television show or film should ever alter and remove the WTC, it's should be left in it's original state, to digitally remove it would be disrespectful. It existed, it's part of history, end of story.

Two of my all time favorite films, The Pope of Greenwich Village and Saturday Night Fever have scenes with the WTC in it, it's terrible what happened on 911, but it must be remembered so we learn from it.

reply

Actually after season 3 of The Sopranos, the shot of the World Trade Center in the opening credits was removed.

I wonder if those who were behind 9/11 knew that the twin towers appear in many films, always reminding us of what happened. Maybe that's not a bad thing.

Of all the movies I've seen the WTC in, King Kong (1976) is easily the one that sticks with me the most. I remember my older sister had a poster from the movie on her bedroom wall back then with Kong staddling the two towers. That's probably why that movie resonates with me so much regarding the WTC. Those buildings always struck me as the mightiest, most indestructible and permanent man-made structures. It was unreal seeing them just collapse like that!

reply

The World Trade Center was in too many movies to list. Some of them were "Godspell", "King Kong 1976", "Trading Places" and "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York".

In "Spider-Man 2002" The World Trade Center Towers can be seen in the background of some scenes and once in the reflection of Spider-Man's eye. In addition, during the ending scene where he is swinging around the American trade building, you can see the towers in the far background slightly blurred. The makers of the film chose not to remove them digitally.

"Gangs of New York" was made long after 9/11 but you can clearly see WTC in the last shot as the timelapse ends. Scorsese made the decision to leave it in and not show it fading away to a skyline without the WTC. That would have been even more upsetting.

On another tack, I'm amazed at some of the comments above. WTC was a private office building but there are those bashing the gov't or the city for not rebuilding it? The gov't was obligated to defend it, and us (but obviously failed), but paying to rebuild it or paying to replace it was not and never has been the purpose of either the federal, state or city gov't. This just underscores how people allow themselves to believe that the gov't should control everything, do everything, solve everything, and why the the people of this country are in such a sorry state of dependence. Pretty soon you're going to want to want the gov't to start thinking for you and even have total control over your healthcare. Wait a minute... didn't that already happen? How's that working out for you so far? Ouch. Not too good, huh? Idiots.

reply

I know some of you are very angry about what happened and why this building is in movies but don't you think it is time we told our children when they ask what is that building when you watch a movie they need to know.

The WTC was symbolic of NYC, and is, was, and always will be an iconic structure. Countless films either showcase the WTC, or is visible in the background to provide a sense of place.

In SNF, I think the Towers are displayed prominently because Tony desires to make it there. This is one of my favorite movies with the Towers.

Others are, Trading Places, Ghostbusters and Escape From New York (Snake Plissken parks his glider on the roof).

At the beginning of Blondie's music video "Heart of Glass", iconic NYC landmarks are shown, the Twin Towers being one of them. That close up shot of the twin towers always gets to me.
