Just got it on Bluray and watched it for the first time...

After reading a bunch of articles with Quentin Tarantino about his favorite films I bought a bunch of his top recommended on amazon. Before watching Rolling Thunder I read the *beep* S*** out of the message boards and reviews on it. Now after seeing it i think another fellow IMDB user said i best in response to some Rolling Thunder haters that said they were bored when he said...

My brother had an amusing comment while we were watching this on MGM HD: "This movie is trying too hard to be a real drama instead of the B grade drive in revenge flick it should be."

Your brother misses the essence of what made grindhouse films like Rolling Thunder so great. Back in the 70s a great many films weren't really striving to be categorized as anything in particular, so they fused traditional dramatic elements with outrageous violence, crazy imagery (sharpening a hook!), and other amusements that put them firmly in the B movie bin. There's a sense of freedom in these films because of those lack of constraints, much unlike the imitators now who seem to just amplify the violence at a frenzied pace (Hobo With A Shotgun). Films from the Rolling Thunder era are far more interesting in large part because they're not trying to "be something" and fit the preconceived templates of the 21st century guy falling asleep on the couch, who feels like he's seen it all before but hasn't really thought all that much about it."

I thought that was pretty accurate. All i gotta say is this movie was badass and great. there is depth in it that unfortunately most of this generations audience will not have the IQ or attention span to appreciate. I want to say to them "shut up and go watch Riddick (not knocking Riddick) or The Avengers (not knocking The Avengers). I will say in all fairness it got slow in the middle but the beginning and end were great and worth watching. I would say this would make a great remake if done right but chances are they would cast a bunch of pretty boys and make it another Red Dawn remake.

i actually got done seeing it for the 2nd time (my first time was Feb 2nd 2012) just now, although the first in HD, and it it held steady and might have got a bit stronger for me on a re-watch.

basically it's more of a slower paced character driven movie carried by William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones (Jones has the smaller role as Devane is the lead) who both play the strong silent type of characters as they are both pretty much dead inside after the war sucked the life out of their souls and then someone crosses Devane by trying to take some money that was given to him etc and then Devane calls on his war buddy (Tommy Lee Jones) and then comes the thunder ;)

i give it a solid 7/10.
