#SPOILER WARNING-TIMOTHY BOTTOM'S COMEUPPANCE!

I OWNED FOR YEARS A VHS TAPED OFF BBC1,
AND IT SHOWED THE SCENE WHERE 'YOUNG MAN'PLAYED BY TIMOTHY BOTTOMS GETS HIS JUST DESSERTS,WHERE HE IS KILLED BY THE COASTER
I VIVIDLY RECALL THAT SCENE ALBEIT SHOCKING, AS I WAS 9 AT THE TIME WHEN I WATCHED THIS,IT SHOWED HIM COVERED IN BLOOD WITH HIS EYES WIDE OPEN, I ALSO OWN THE REGION1 DVD, AND THE SCENE ONLY 6 SECONDS LONG IS GONE!
IAM SURE SOME OF THE SEQUENCE IN THE EQUALLY SHOCKING OPENING SCENE IAM SURE IS ALSO CUT,

The first time I saw this movie was as a sneek preview in April of '77 and I remember the scene you described very well. When the movie was mass released that summer I believe the scene was edited out. I was 11 at that time and saw the movie literally thirty times at the theater that summer and don't recall ever having seen the camera focused for an extended period on Bottoms' bloodied face then, or since.

I don't believe the original coaster crash scene was tampered with however, unless it was on commercial television.

it Was just A 2 Sec Glimpse We See Of Timothy bottoms
Bloodied Face,I Wish i had hung on to the tape!

Wow! It Must Of been something Seeing This Back Then!
In 'Sensaround'

This Film Would Work Wonders If It Was Re-Released On DvD (Anamorphically)In A DTS Re-Mix,A Commentry Track From The Stars would Be Great,
I've EarthQuake' On DvD Region 2, Sound mix is superb! And It Works Well With a Home Cinema,

When I was a kid seeing it at the theater I would alternate where I would sit. If I was in the mood to pretend I was in the front seat of an actual rollercoaster I would sit in the first row of the theater. If I wanted to be blasted out of my seat I would sit in the rear of the theater where the senserround speakers were.
One thing that stuck with me for a couple years after seeing this film was an inability to ride my local coaster, The Comet in Crystal Beach, Ontario Canada out of sheer fear. The ride was scary enough with its location on the banks of Lake Erie.

A new dvd release with commentary and extras would be nice. I can't believe nobody at Universal realises the cult surrounding this film. It only started the whole American Coaster Enthusiast (ACE) club.

reply

You can still ride the Comet, at Great Escape, in Lake George NY.

This movie also launched my interest in coasters and theme parks.

reply

Yeah, I was just there for Great Escape's Halloween fright fest this past October and the weather was lousy, cold and rainy. Rode the Comet twice and then ran out of there. I'd been to Great Escape a couple of times before under better conditions but still found the Comet lacking as compared to when it was at Crystal Beach.

It's all about location.

I showed my 9 year old daughter Rollercoaster a couple nights ago for the first time. I held off showing it to her before because she's always been afraid of coasters and won't ride them when we go to the area parks.

I don't think the movie changed her mind either way.

reply

yep....it's still thrilling after all these years and in fact is in BETTER shape now than when it was first built. The Great Escape (or as I call them, the Great Mistake) has treated the old gal well and rejuvenated her.

reply

I did the same thing Tsar, going to different seats to experience the thrill of the coaster rides. I watched this one at the theaters several times, just so I could relive the rides.

This film also sparked my love affair with coasters! I lived in WNY when it was out and remember the Comet when it was at Crystal Beach very, VERY well.

Thanx for bringing back some fond memories. :)

Why would they cut out a scene because of blood and his eyes open? That is shown in movies all the time.

reply

It's crazy, they should give us a decent edition of this classic, perhaps George Segal Timothy Bottoms would contribute to a commentary track for a Blu-Ray release?

reply

The scene where Segal fires the gun at Bottoms near the end looks edited also. When Bottoms is running he has blood all over his backside. Yet when the gun is fired you can't really figure out what happened.

reply

total joke how we don't have a proper release of this classic, maybe there will be a release by 'Shout Factory? with all of the 'cut scenes' reinstated?

reply

Ironically, a gardner was hit and injured in the same spot several years later. It is the final drop of the coaster, by the way.

Revolution is now overshadowed by this gigantic flying coaster called Tatsu. Really wierd where the loop once stood tall and proud and is now a mere shadow under this monster thing.
