I agree! Back when I saw this on HBO, I fell madly in love with the soundtrack and managed to track down a copy of it at long last. Back then, even a fairly inexpensive record was a dent in my budget, but I never regretted finding this one, along with such treasures as "Joseph Andrews" (as I recall, that one is only a demo, and was never released).
It IS amazing what he incorporates in the soundtrack. It's a wonderful match of picture and sound. While it has fallen out of favor with some, I love this movie as much as when I first saw it. I have no doubt whatsoever that I passed the century mark on this. Some say it needs "more action"; I saw it's just fine as it is and would be ruined if they tried to make it nowadays. I'm certain of one thing: They'd have a songtrack instead of music. *sigh*
On a final note: I learned to play "Magic Carousel" on my bowed psaltery, stumping every listener, many of them finally asking me what that catchy melody is! I love how it can go on and on and on and on... It's my favorite "sleep song"~a tune I can play in my mind when I'm trying to fall asleep.
P.S. I'm watching it right now on good ol' Encore Mystery. It's heading for 4 a.m., and I really should get to bed. Oh dear...
