What could Disney do to promote the film more?

What do you think Disney could do to make The Rescuers more popular? In what ways could they promote it. Aside from making a remastered Special Edition, I think they should:

Release more merchandise - I see thousands of soft toy Simbas, Nemos, Flounders etc, yet I've never seen any Benards, Biancas, Evinrudes etc. And what about T-Shirts and ceramics? I've never seen any of those either.

Release a DVD pack containing The Rescuers and its sequel. It doesn't cost much to do, and if it's at a lower price than buying the DVDs seperately, then it should boost sales.

Make the DVD more widely known by giving it a decent advertising campaign. People aren't going to buy films they don't know about.

What are your thoughts?

*Looking at Taran's DVD list thingy on profile* But it says you OWN RDU. And you want the Don Bluth Thumbelina, which I know you hate. I don't see much logic there.

I guess some characters in the parks would be nice cause I've seen that annoying whatever from Robin Hood there now and then.

Perfectly understandable, Taran. I have the same going on with Bourne Supremacy. Y'see, I saw the Bourne Identity and loved it, so I decided to get it, but it came with Bourne Supremacy as a real good deal at Best Buy. So, I bought 'em both and it turned out I hate Bourne Supremacy.

You sound like me when I was younger. I had like the world's shortest attention span(Hence why I was big on Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Pink Panther, Tex Avery toons, Sing Along tapes, etc.) and I could never sit through a movie. I'd stop paying attention at some points and I'd get scenes confused with sequels and TV show versions, like with TLM and TLK.

When I'd watch something years later, I'd notice all this stuff I never noticed or got mixed up. For example, when I watched TLK years later, I was like "Rafiki hit Simba on the head with his stick?! I thought that was only in the Timon and Pumbaa TV series." or TLM and "Part of Your World is on that early in? I thought it was on much further in." or Aladdin and "I thought Jasmine got more pissed about Aladdin being a phoney prince." See what I mean? Do we have any complete opposites of little me here?

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

reply

Taran, I KNEW your reply would be something like that!
I know you hate the sequel and I'm cool with that, but there are a lot of people out who I'm sure want to buy both films at a low price (myself included). Besides, I've seen worse sequels...

reply

Yeah, worse sequels like TLM 2. Ariel was such a hypocrite in that("Melody can't know about merpeople or Atlantica." *Later...* "Melody, this is your grandpa. He's a merman that runs Atlantica.")

Did everyone just completely ignore my question from earlier about movie attention spans?

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

reply

As for attention spans, I don't remember anything specific except that I would watch Fantasia when I was around 6. I did fast forward the bits I found boring- Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, whenever Deems Taylor or Stokowski started talking, the part with the soundtrack and Ave Maria (I still zone out during that one).

In Australia they released both Rescuers films together. You can see the package here:

http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/786995

And Rescuers Down Under was much much better than The Fox and the Hound 2.

reply

RDU looked pretty good from the fragments I saw on Toon Disney.

I hate Fantasia except for Sorcerer's Apprentice. I swear, I could never sit that long, unless it was POTC AWE, where I sat for all 3 hours in the theater not even moving once.

What if it were to be re-released theatrically? People that saw it in cinemas as children 30 years ago would have their own kids of an appropriate age to take to it. They could then put out the merchandise, soundtrack, theme park characters and such. Then about 6 months after it finishes it's theatrical run, release a remastered special edition DVD, while the film is still fresh in the public mind. But still, it probably wouldn't be profitable. It seems people are more interested in all things loud and trashy.

Just a side question Taran, when and why did you start specifically watching Disney movies in December? (I remember reading on another thread that you do this.) I find it funny as I do the same thing except I start on December 2. I started in 2003 as I'd finished school and had just bought quite a few Disney movies. Today I watched Melody Time and I never realised how scary the buoys are when Little Toot gets sent out to sea. And that the whistles on the boats have mouths.

As for Rescuers Down Under, I do like it but if I could rearrange history I would have it undone. All the mid eighties films would be phenomenal successes, leaving the company with sufficient funds to release an experimental film in 1990. This would be the Fantasia sequel. It would then be the first animated film made without a camera (using CAPS) and could be released on the original Fantasia's 50th anniversary.

reply

[deleted]

The sequel I think was unneeded, but compared to 'Pochahontas II' it's very impressive. I liked Joanna :)

reply

Taran why do you put the year by every movie you mention? I was just wondering.

BTW, I have a few questions:

1. I checked out those clips from the Golden Films you put up on YouTube and I though they were pretty good, especially the Thumbelina, but that's not the point. Why does your YouTube page say you're from Spain if you live in Illinois? And what does it say in that box thing? All the accents came out weird and I can't understand what it says.

2. Where you've lived confuses me. From what you've told me, you were born here in America, moved to Spain at age 2, moved back to America at about the 9th grade and stayed. Am I right?

3.What kinda birds doya have? I have a parakeet and a cockatiel.

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

reply

[deleted]

Perfectly understandable to stick with your heritage. I think my ancestors were from Spain, but got kicked out during the Inquisition(Hence my being a Sephardic Jew). I, on the other hand, am a 3rd generaion American, but I'd love to see Turkey, the land where most of my family came from, some day.

When you say parakeets, do you mean what are actually the budgie as pictured here, which is what I have: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/birds/parakeets/images/BudgieWBPk_C072 .jpg

Or like a Quaker parakeet or ring-necked parakeet?

My parakeet's quite noisy himself, not to mention ornery. He's 9 years old and I think it's his orneriness that keeps him young, lol.

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

reply

[deleted]

Sounds just like my Crunchy(My parakeet). He doesn't know how to shut up and a many a weekend morning my dad would come downstairs and threaten to do something to him like shove all his feathers down his throat. When my aunt and uncle's border collie, Oreo, comes over, he likes to try to go to the edge of his cage to look at her, but she thinks lunch. When something on TV like whistling comes on, he and his partner-in-crime, my cockatiel Sunny, go crazy.

What do your parakeets look like? Crunchy(I was 8 when I got him, OK?) is your standard yellow and green, but a duller shade of both colors and with gray, as opposed to black, stripes.

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

Your Disney Marathon is more organised than mine. I just watch them at any time and have plenty of distractions. This year I'll watch everything up to Home on the Range with the exceptions of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad and Make Mine Music, due to they're not having a region four release. I did read somewhere that Disney stopped numbering their films after Lilo and Stitch so I decided it was permissible not to buy Chicken Little or Meet the Robinsons. And my birthday is three days before yours.

I like the name Crunchy. All my fish except Bubbles are named after people. And your cat sounds like mine. It reminds me of The Rum Tum Tugger from the musical Cats.

A bit more on topic- if The Rescuers did get a special edition what would people want to see on it? I'd like something about Shelby Flint and the music of the film and if they had any auditions or footage of Michelle Stacy I think that would be interesting as well. A commentary with people involved in the film that are still alive would be nice too. And of course fully restored picture and sound, like what they did with Bambi.

reply

[deleted]

Agreed. The picture quality on the current release is, for the lack of better wording - crap. They call it a 'snappy new remastering.' If THAT is remastering, then I'm Prime Minister. For pity's sake, Madame Medusa's skin appears grey in some scenes!
I'm not particulary bored of the cover because I'm used to the UK 1992 VHS cover, but a new one would be nice.

May I see a pic of the 92 Euro tape?

TR needs something to set it's popularity off again, kinda like with Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. It came out in the late 1800's and it was a hit. As the years went on, it basically when into obscurity and stopped being printed. That was, till 1987 when Andrew Lloyd Webber made the B-way musical we all know and love and it was rediscovered.

So, my point is TR needs something huge to bring it outta obscurity that everyone'll notice. I'm thinking maybe having a float or big part in a float in a Disney parade or a part in Fantasmic(Medusa as one of the villains is my best idea).

I bet when kids see TBC, they'd think what I thought when I saw Oliver and Co reissued: that it was this brand new movie, but it was brand new for me, kinda how TBC would be for kids nowadays.

reply

In 1996 we had a re-release of The Fox and the Hound. I'm annoyed that I didn't go to see it. I actually never saw it till 2001. I'm not sure about The Black Cauldron making money though. If it was a monumental failure back then when it had new, exciting technology (the cauldron born) I think now with the slew of CGI movies around it would get lost amongst those as well as there being lots of fantasy around (which people will probably get sick of. Also people seem to have either never heard of it or know it for having a bad reputation. It's not one of my favourites, when I first saw it on DVD I failed the inane kiddie game, I'd been paying that little attention. But I would still go see it at the cinema.

I do think The Rescuers could do well. Maybe if The Frog Princess does well and the general populace's faith in traditionally animated features is restored Disney will start re-releasing. Another point is that with DVDs being inexpensive in comparison to a cinema ticket maybe they won't re-release films as the vault took over that job.

One thing I miss that doesn't have much to do with this- How they used to show a short cartoon before the feature. I can remember Lambert the Sheepish Lion and The Old Mill being played. Did they do this in the early-mid 90's in the US and UK?

reply

[deleted]

Like with Narnia.

reply

[deleted]

Promotion costs a lot though. I just really doubt that the average person would go to the cinema to see a movie that did poorly 22 years ago when they could buy it on DVD. Here an adults ticket to the movies costs around $15 and a child's about $11. The DVD of The Black Cauldron is priced from $8.83 to $18.99. And this is Disney we're talking about. If they thought they could squeeze a profit from it they would. But they don't even re-release films that were successful at the time, so cinema in general may not be economically viable for older films.

I've had said-os, like one time I said something was "gooder" when I meant to say better.

I do read-os quite a bit. Like where you wrote said-os I was trying to figure out why saying oss was relevant till I read the rest of the sentence. Or when I was reading The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene I read the word zareba as zebra. I also used to read Nebuchadnezzar really strangely, I don't remember how though.

I do think it's best to use the whole ten star rating. If you don't it sort of makes 2 1 and 10 9 therefore limiting your range by two digits. But then I don't know if any film actually deserves ten but lots deserve a one (Jetlag Alice in Wonderland for one).

reply

[deleted]

I just didn't see any point in it being made. It may amuse some small children but that's about all. So why would someone buy this for their child when there are much better films out there that have greater replay value? In terms of the animated film as profit making children's entertainment it really doesn't compare in quality to the competition, for example Disney. And as commodities they have to be compared, so why would someone buy the inferior product for their child? I watch animation as an art form, so there was nothing here for me. I think even as a kid I would have been bored by it, as it was too friendly and had nothing scary or dangerous which is what I seem to remember most from childhood films.

But everyone to their own taste. The above was just an explanation as to why I didn't like it.

reply

[deleted]

[deleted]

I know what you mean about it being mean. When I was younger I used to go for the opposite football team to everyone else because I felt sorry for it. But then 2 becomes the new 1 because they're just numbers so it sort of means the same thing, you just have fewer available numbers. But I do get what you mean.

I don't really have any interest in Pixar (CGI's not my thing) but the Scottish princess could be good. Probably because I like Scotland. It's probably one of my favourite countries with England and Austria. Although I've never been to any of them.

Taran, I'm with you on appreciating the lack of toilet humour. I think you should give Rescuers Down Under a few more chances. Marahute is the best animated bird I've seen, the backgrounds are nice as is the score. This is a bad comparison but when I first tried to watch Fritz the Cat I thought it a disgusting abomination of an animated film. I only got halfway through. The second time I watched the whole thing and still hated it. Third time- about 20 minutes and then turned it off. But the last time I watched it, I turned. In a way I liked it. I was shocked. I was able to say the stripes on Fritz were well done. I was able to "whatever" to the immature "adult" content.

Do you ever go see things on Broadway? I really wanted to see The Lion King, my friend and I had half planned flying to Melbourne to see it but procrastinated too long and missed out. I did see The Phantom of the Opera in 1998 with school when it did an Australian tour. I would go and see Xanadu (the film's a bad guilty pleasure of mine, the soundtrack too) as it's playing, I also would have liked to have seen Cats.

It would be interesting to see a Rescuers musical. They could use marionettes when the mice interact with humans and actors when there's no humans present. It probably wouldn't work, but it's interesting thinking about it. Someone's waiting For You could be sung by Penny's memory of Rufus and Tomorrow is Another Day could be a duet between Bernard and Bianca.

reply

That would be a tad weird. Besides, I heard Aladdin's gonna me a B-way musical next.

I have seen B-way shows, but with school cause they're just so expensive normally. My first one was for my 6th grade trip and it was TLK. I've alos seen BatB, All Shook Up, and that Cirque du Soleil show Wintuk, which isn't exactly B-way cause it's at the Garden, but now I wanna seen that CdS show from WDW now: La Nouba.

reply

[deleted]

An Aladdin adaptation would probably be better than Tarzan on B-way was. The show only lasted a few months and they had to replace most of the cast due to injuries. Have you read anything about The Little Mermaid on B-way?

reply

I haven't read much about TLM, but I WANNA SEE IT SO BADLY! Good news is the college I'll be going to (Stony Brook) gives students discounts on stuff, including B-way tix, so I might see it next year.

I would actually like to see any of them. And I think I like Aladdin a bit more than I thought I did as I watched it today and enjoyed it while watching, but I'm over it now. I don't know why the Hunchback musical was only in Germany. I'd like to see that one too.

But I do mostly wish that I'd seen Cats. I have the soundtrack Cassette in my car at the moment. This is unrelated but here's my cat in partially stereotypical Scottish dress:

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd211/dee-elle-ee-oh/cat004.jpg (my mum would kill me if she saw the cat on the counter, it's not even supposed to come inside)

I only made it (the cat is female but I call it it because I found it when I was 12 and wasn't knowledgeable about checking and things) those because I made myself a Tam O'Shanter based on the one that Benjamin Bunny takes from Mr McGregor's garden (http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/wml/exhibitions/beatrixpotter/graph ics/small/benjamin_bunny.jpg) and I had enough wool left over for the cat.

I'm Wilhelmina Slater and I don't get wet.

reply

I'm not really sure about that, I did read a book once set during the potato famine time in Ireland where the English were in authoritative positions (by force?) and would not distribute food supplies to the common people. I think Ireland were generally oppressed by England, similar to Scotland.

I don't know if you know or care Mel/anastasiafan1997 (I'm not sure what to call you, everyone seems to call you Mel as it's quicker than anastasiafan1997, but I don't know if it secretly annoys you as we don't know you in real life- What should I call you?) that Disney is making an animated short named The Ballad of Nessie about The Loch Ness Monster. I found it here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_theatrical_animated_featur es, it seems to be set to be released accompanying The Princess and the Frog. I'm happy about this as I miss the shorts before films. I remember Lambert the Sheepish Lion being on before The Lion King. And when I was really tiny small I think I watched The Family-Ness, about a whole family of Nessies.

I think if Pixar makes the Scottish Princess Movie her accent will be like Mrs Doubtfire's (I'm not sure if it is genuine sounding or not). It probably won't be a farcical accent if it's a serious princess film and I don't think it will be too thick as some people have difficulty understanding them. For example my portable DVD Player is being held hostage by a couple of Scotsmen (OK, they're really only waiting on parts to fix it) and my mum thinks ringing people makes things go faster. I don't like phones, so she volunteered to call. She was getting so confused as she couldn't understand what they were saying and then got annoyed at me for not reminding her of their accents (when I dropped it ff I was exited because they were Scottish). She also can't watch Life of Grime: Edinburgh. And she struggled through some of the Yorkshire dialogue in Wuthering Heights.

reply

[deleted]

We aren't really that obsessed with Scotland in the states. We do have the Loch Ness Monster, a roller coaster in Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA, and my first looping roller coaster.

Speaking of shorts, there was this hilarious Goofy toon at the National Treasure 2 about home theater systems. I like the part with the speakers with how there had to be enough to "make you pernamently deaf" and the part with the subwoofer that sends him flying out. It was great. BTW, I recently got my Donald Volume 3 DVD and I have a new fave Donald toon: Trailer Horn, where he fights with Chip n' Dale with his trailer.

Bizzarly in Australia the Platinum Line were all called Masterpiece until The Jungle Book which is 40th Anniversary Platinum.

I wish with the Platinums that they started with Snow White and went the whole way through the canon. And each DVD coincided with a cinematic re-release. They'd maybe have to do four a year, not all in sequence, a popular film and then a less known one. And in the DVD case there'd be a little coupon that you send to Disney and then they send back a nice art book with information on the film, where the film comes into Disney history and with discussion about the original source material (for those that have it). The Rescuers would have benefited from this as it seems to be forgotten that it was successful. The same with Oliver and Company though I think it's brought up in The Little Mermaid DVD, how they didn't think The Little Mermaid would match Oliver and Company in profits.

I alos like Soup's On when the nephews are chugging out with the food like a train and Donald stops 'em wiith his head dinging like a crossing bell. Didya watch Three for Breakfast yet? I love the part when Chip's buttering the roof so Donald can fall off and he taps Donald's foot to make him lift it up, saying "come on". I just think it's funny.

Y'know what's another all-time fave of mine? In the world of Mickey, I love The Band Concert (his first color toon) and Mickey's Fire Brigade (I will NEVER stop laughing at Goofy throws out the tea table, has it go back in with coffee and donuts, and a cuckoo comes when he bites the donut). Do you have Complete Goofy?

In the future everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.

For some reason I get really annoyed when they post about The Recall Incident. I really hate Shrek and am not to fond of Harry Potter either.

I really don't understand why people make such a big deal about those things (as well as the supposed "Take off your clothes in Aladdin") yet Lyrics from Hellfire "This burning desire is leading me to sin" and Phil in Hercules being a Peeping Tom go unnoticed. I don't actually care about either of those things, it just annoys me that people only seem to care when they think they're special because they found something hidden that's naughty.

Taran, no offense, but how doya figure out all these little intricate details in the animation like book colors changing? I'm lucky if I even notice one.

reply

I never noticed the book changing but I think I learnt about it in the goofs section of imdb.

Those pegasai changing colour I always put down to magical water. There is another mistake in the Pastoral Symphony segment. When a male and female centaur are walking left a bush in the foreground (lower right of the screen) moves with them. That might not make sense reading it. What happens is the centaurs stay in the centre of the screen the camera panning with them. The background scrolls left to right and the bush should move with it but instead stays in the same position in relation to the centaurs.

But I agree about it being one of Disney's best. The comets in The Sorcerer's Apprentice are amazing.

I have an idea, how bous this. In a commercial, lets say they release it again. They say "Buy it now! It has boobies!" Of course I'm referring to the infamous nude woman that appears for two frames in the film

Yeah, I mean, IK'm not in the Rescuers myself, but it is supposedly THE highest grossing cartoon feature---note I am using in that era's prices for tickets..

BTW Of course, there is the World Trade Center shot [it's set in NYC] if I recall, never saw the glick, so it's obviously going to go..:(

reply

Umm... Are you SURE "The Rescuers" has a scene of the WTC buildings? You MAY be thinking of "Oliver & Company"...which did.

reply

Yes, you're right. The World Trade Center is clearly visible on several shots of the 1988 film.
