Hey guys, I have a running blog about the films of 1983 and just put up an entry about the 1983 re-release of The Rescuers. I'm curious if anyone knows anything specific about the motivation for re-releasing the movie just 6 years after the initial run. Please let me know if you've got any info on this and in the meantime, here's my blog entry on the topic.
Disney used to rerelease many of their movies to cinemas every several years, but this died down once homevideo became widely available. Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs for example has been rereleased in 1944, 1952, 1958, 1967, 1975, 1983, 1987, and 1993.
I saw this film when I was three years old in theater, my folks were big Disney Goobers and when I was young there was not a film that Disney released or re released in theaters that we didnt see, my pop actually saved all the movie stubs and put them in my babybook, I think its kinda neat that I have movie stubs for movies such as the rescuers, the fox and the hound, the black cauldron, great mouse detective, song of the south and all the ones going up to recennt, its kinda funny but it was like my own little collection before I was born, my folks actually collected all the stubs from when they were dating and even after being married. They are all nicely placed and pressed in scrapbooks....
Oh and to answer the whole OP question, Disney had the 15-16 untouchable films that were never to be released onto home media or tv.... they would be released in a 5=7 year release format... the company always knew that a release would keep money in the bank, and Snow White proved that so many times before.
Those were as follow
Snow White Pinocchio Fantasia Dumbo Bambi Cinderella Alice in Wonderland Peter Pan Lady and the Tramp Sleeping Beauty 101 Dalmatians Sword in the Stone Jungle Book Aristocats Robin Hood
also Song of the South- up until the early 80s
When VHS first came into light, Disney was releasing videos for a price up to $89, Disney wanted to make sure that the films would be owned by very few people, they wanted to market the films and make enough cash, but still release them in theaters, the list went down the line starting with Robin Hood, which was the first film to go back into theaters and than make its way to VHS. The next inline was Sword in the Stone, mind you these two titles would never get another theatrical release after their home video release. Robin Hood made its way to TV just as the Sword in the Stone did, not less than a month after video release. The rest of the films followed in suit with Snow White ending the untouchable in 1993 when it mades its first HomeVideo release. Which btw was the same day Jurassic Park made its HomeVideo Debut
I hope this info helps out, sorry if it seems like a run on rant, take care all
Robin Hood is the first movie I remember seeing the in theater. I also remember seeing re-releases of Peter Pan, Snow White, Cinderella, Jungle Book, and the Aristocats. Snow White I remember was re-released for its 50th anniversary.
The theatrical re-releases I saw in my youth were The Jungle Book, 101 Dalmatians, Snow White, Oliver & Company, and The Little Mermaid. Growing up, I was big on all the classic Disney animated movies. Little Mermaid, Bambi, Dumbo, Jungle Book, Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp...
I only really first heard about The Rescuers when it was re-released in the mid-1990s, before that I only knew The Rescuers Down Under. It's a shame the original is so underrated. Is it because it's not a fairy tale? That it's not as musical or upbeat? Perhaps. When I think of the other animated Disney films, I think of bright colors, but when I think of The Rescuers, I think of dark colors. That's not a bad thing, at least not to me, but I guess the tone was dreary and not as appealing? Again, that's too bad. This movie deserves much more admiration and respect than it gets.
i saw this in 1983, it was shown with mickeys christmas carol. i wonder why it was re released in 1983 i would assume disney needed to release something and they didnt have a new cartoon till 1985 and fox and hound which came out in 1981 and wasnt a hit, so they released a movie that made money and was recent,
