The scariest scene...

was when Penny was down in that cave and the water kept pouring in and trying to suck her down that huge hole. When I was a kid I remember watching that and thinking what would have happened had she fallen down the hole.

It's been so long since I've seen this movie, I'm sure it wasn't a cave..I remember it being called something else lol.

They sometimes call it "the Black Hole".

I remember being scared of that black hole and also of the skull that hid the diamond. lol The whirlpool didn't bother me so much because I knew they'd make it out, but there was something about when they were trying to get to the other side of it while it was making all those sounds that really freaked me out. I think I thought there were monsters down there that were going to pop up and try to eat them.

Then Medusa scared the crap out of me when I realized she was going to let Penny drown to death down there if they couldn't get the diamond out of the skull in time. I remember getting so furious at Medusa when Penny was begging her to bring her up and Medusa roars "NOT UNTIL YOU GET THE DIAMOND!"

Evil, evil.

I had a difficult time maintaining logical scale when I was little, and of course the hole appeared much bigger to Bernard than it did to Penny, but I didn't realize that. I figured Penny would also be washed away as Bernard nearly was. Bernard's fright makes the moment very tense.

I like the part where the diamond is flung from the skull's jaw into the water and Penny frantically dives after it, as it is her passport to life and the only hope she has of escaping her fate inside the cave.

I saw this for the first time today (I'm 44!) with my daughter who is 8. I was bored out of my mind, but during that scene, my daughter gripped my arm so tightly, it really got to her clearly, so totally hitting the mark for the target audiece. Job done!
