Does anyone think that the nude photo controversy...

...hurt the film's reputation? Because before 1999 The Rescuers seemed very popular at Disney. Why would Disney make a sequel to an unpopular movie (Disneytoon direct to video movies do NOT count)? The Rescuers was the bright spot after Walt's death and before the Disney Renaissance. The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Fox and the Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver & Company did not have the same impact that this film had. Plus there should be merchandise at the Disney store with these characters. At Disney parks, Bernard and Bianca were featured often in the past. I think Disney is letting The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King overshadow this film. I think even The Princess and the Frog, Tangled and Wreck It Ralph as well have over shadowed this film. What do you guys think?

There's a good chance it did. I had thought a LOT about this in the past few years.

Either way, another user pointed out that, whether this film was a success or not at the time of its original release, almost anything that wasn't from before Walt's death, an OFFICIAL "Princess" film or "Lion King"-related is pretty much frickin shunned by the company for the time being (The film's recent 2 Movie Combo, which, while OK, lacked any special features...like how they made the film, per se...)

That is kind of sad. Disney is not just about Fairy Tales or Jungle movies. Disney had hit movies that broke the convention. 101 Dalmatians, The Rescuers, Lilo & Stitch and Wreck It Ralph are Disney's most significant contemporary films to the company and break that Disney fairy tale tradition.

Yep, and I hope they promptly fired whoever was responsible.

I remember seeing a review of The Rescuers that (from what I remember) acted as though the appearance of the picture made the entire movie pornographic or something, and barely even talking about the actual quality of the movie itself (which doesn't make it much a of review), but I can't find it now, so I don't know how bad it was.

I also feel that, for a time at least, it was all people talked about or seemed to remember about this movie, which is a shame, because in my opinion it is a great movie. When people talk about The Lion King, they may or may not mention the fact that "SEX" appeared in the sky (actually it was "SFX"), but they will remember other details about the movie (that said, I've never actually talked about The Rescuers to that many people in real life). I don't know if things have changed, but it seemed like the most memorable thing about this movie was a photo that appeared for barely a fraction of a second. The movie itself has some memorable scenes, and what's really annoying is that an actual scene I liked was actually (I think) the scene where this photo appears, but for the scene itself and the song played. It's actually a cute scene, and the fact that people focus, or focused on something that the majority of us wouldn't have even noticed if they hadn't been told about it.

That said, I have heard recently (but currently can't find where I read it, even though I know the forum) that it was never even supposed to be sexual or racy at all. Apparently the picture itself is an actual art, and the person who put it in could have been paying homage to the artist or something rather than try to ruin the movies reputation, though he or she would still be taking a risk in doing so as this is a children's movie, but regardless it was apparently meant to be "artistic nude" not "porno nude".

Either way, if it does harm the movie's reputation it does so in a very pointless way.

The nonsense about the controversy has indeed died out finally, which is why Disney did not hesitate to give the film a publicized release on Blu-ray, even if the quality of the release is only so-so in terms of picture presentation.

Whether the image is a painting or a photograph does not change the fact that it is not pornographic. Nudity without sex is not pornography. The image in question is of female breasts, which although inappropriate to show publicly in conservative societies, are not sexual organs. Even if the image had been of sexual genitalia, that alone would not have made them pornographic. Otherwise, most classical art museums would be considered pornographic.

It's sad that the nude photo did a lot of damage to this film's reputation. This is easily one of my favorite Disney films, yet, they don't care about it. As much as I loved Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers, I read it was originally suppose to be about Bernard and Miss Bianca and I kind of wish it stayed that way.

I still can't even fathom WHY somebody would do that. And records say it was done intentionally by somebody at the studios to an existing print of the film. Well, these individuals must have thought it was really funny at the time, either because they were drunk or perhaps about to be fired and this was their way of sticking it to the company. Must have thought, "eh, who's gonna notice?" Answer: somebody with WAY too much time on their hands.
