This is a Great Movie and Here's Why...

I saw this movie as a kid on HBO and loved it. Yes, it is a "B" class WW II movie but it is supposed to be. The actors did a good job and were appealing, especially Michael Pergolani. The small budget for this film was also utilized very well in my opinion. It was a lot of fun. I have read some of the opinions on IMDB and have to say that some people just take some films too seriously.

I agree. I just got done watching this and I thought it was great movie. It reminded me in some senses of the A-Team (I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't at least a small bit of the basis for that show.)

reply

I never thought of that but you could be right. Also, if you ever saw the comedy "Top Secret" with Val Kilmer, it looks as though they took some of the ideas for that movie from "Inglorious Bastards".

Couldn't agree more.

I just got done watching this movie for the first time. And it. Was. AWESOME!
It's not quite that it entertained me. It's more that it picked me up by the shirt collar and slapped the sh*t outta me, while shouting "So, you think you're tough, huh? THIS IS WHAT TOUGH REALLY IS, SALLY!!!"
I refuse to give the film snobs any satisfaction by saying it was just a fun B movie. Maybe that's true if the "B" stands for Badass. Because this movie seriously kicked ass.

Inglorious Bastards was totally F-ing sweet, and you're a Nancy boy if you dare say otherwise.

It is totally F-ing sweet, and it's probably the best thing Enzo Castellari has ever done.

If you haven't seen them, you might be interested in looking for Street Law and The Big Racket (two of Castellari's other films from the same era). They're good too, but not like this one.

The Big Racket, Street Law & Heroin Busters are all far more accomplished films.

I haven't seen Heroin Busters but I agree, I suppose, that there's a sense in which the other two are more "accomplished" than this one. But for my tastes they're nowhere near as much balls-out fun.

My view of the original Inglorious Bastards matches yours exactly, American1. I too watched it (more than once) on HBO years ago. This is not a movie to be taken too seriously, yet it's one of those brilliant little known B-movies. Well, I guess it's not so little known any more, since Tarantino's version will be coming out soon.

On a side note, I've been in a fantasy baseball league since 2000 with a bunch of crazy friends, and my team's name has been the same since I first joined: "Inglorious Bastards". At that time, no one in the league had heard of the movie, and I had a good time explaining about this "spaghetti" WWII movie which made the Dirty Dozen look like a bunch of choir boys.

reply

I'm sure future fantasy baseball teams in your league will think you are referring Tarantino's movie.

I'm glad you feel the same way about the movie. It's a classic B'er.

Had to search out a copy from Holland...well worth it what with those English swines and their patriarchal classification!
"Wow, entertainers AND dancing girls? Is there a buffet as well?"

I had the pleasure of seeing it back in 1978 but had forgotten about it until QT's version came out.

I was never bored once watching this, and I get bored easily
