God Awful

After watching this mess of a movie on TCM last night, I can see why my instincts kept me
away from it for so many decades.

This so-called fantasy has the look of a '70's TV movie, and the humor of a "Love American,
Style" rerun (with about half of the charm). Seriously, a laugh-track would've suited most
of the scenes, especially those in Denver's house "with the kids."

John Denver is surprisingly game, as is the always reliable Teri Garr. But the talky,
repetitious script never gets beyond its opening suggestions, and relies on religious
clichés, while shying away from any real attempt to confront both Bible-belt believers
AND non-believers (both should come away very satisfied, as the movie is just too "safe"
to raise any genuine discussion). On top of which, the laughs are corny and few.

I won't give away the ridiculous, completely unsatisfying ending, but will say it wastes
the talents of about 14 excellent character actors (the great Donald Pleasance must've
come in a 8:00 to start work, and checked out at 9:27) It also features special effects
so mundane, they look like something out of "I Dream of Jeannie."

As for George Burns, he is obnoxious, unconvincing, and very miscast as "God."

Recommended only for morons.

LMAO GEORGE BURNS IS AN ICON..WHILE OH GOD ISNT THE FILM OF THE DECADE..ITS WATCHABLE AND ENTERTAINING..JOHN DENVER DOES THE BEST JOB HE CAN...GEORGE BURNS WAS ALWAYS ROCK SOLID.

reply

Yeah I agree, I remember liking this one quite a bit back in the day.

reply

Agree. About as funny as I Love Lucy reruns..

I liked the movie back in the day. It probably has a 70's date-stamp and doesn't hold up. However, comparing it to a ILL would mean it's still funny and holds up.

reply

I used ILL specifically because Gary is such a fanboi of ILL (not a problem certainly) and I thought it would tweak him a bit. I only did that because he called anyone who liked this movie morons. Tit for tat as it were.

reply

yes

reply

I didn't mention that yes, I think Lucy is still funny today.

reply

So when we watching Oh, God, You Devil!

reply

I thought it was an entertaining, well written and enjoyable film. I think George Burns did a great job as God and was the ideal choice for the role. I found the ending satisfying.

reply

Nothing funny about George Burns, except "..he's the one from the 50's and an icon, he must be funny". Can't stand him actually, Suzanne Pleshette from Oh God Book 2 is funnier than him.

reply

GEORGE BURNS WAS HILARIOUS...HE WAS HILARIOUS IN THE 50S AND HILARIOUS IN THE 80S...HE WAS AN ICON FOR A REASON...HIS WIFE WAS QUITE HILARIOUS HERSELF.🙂

reply

I suppose Milton Burns in drag is sooooo hilarious too.

I haven't seen this in a long time but from what I remember the point of it is that we should not just put God in a box and should think about him and pray to him. Sure this movie is fantasy as God's not going to come to Earth to coerce non believers like the 2 main protagonists to believe in him. Or much belittle rich TV preachers into stopping their greed. But it does make the point like I said that if you do believe in God and Jesus you should pray to him every day and not just when you have a problem you want him to solve.
