Over the top overacting -- both Diane Keaton & Richard Gere

Just watching this now.

What's with the off-the-charts, over-the-top, manic, frenzied over acting on the part of Diane Keaton and Richard Gere?

I generally really enjoy and appreciate and 70s movies. And this was definitely worth watching, but Gere and Keaton's acting is just bad bad bad.

It's not just because it's an "old movie." Or that they're "on drugs."

I didn't think Keaton was over-the-top. Gere, at times, was a bit ridiculous, but I think he was just creating a character who at times, was a bit ridiculous.

Screws fall out all of the time. The world's an imperfect place.

Nothing over the top about Keaton. Gere's character was a hustler and a coke head. It made sense for him to be a bit manic.
