Anyone know: The music used on end credits?

It sounds like Darlene Edwards but there aren't any music credits on the film and it has been driving me mad for the past 20+ years. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me.

Well, the music is definitely the 30s tune "Carioca" which I believe was featuried in Fred Astaire's "Dancing Down to Rio."
But the singer..... I don't remember her name but I remember her act. She's kind of an Edith Piaf pastiche, singing tunes just slighlty out of tune. I heard an album of hers at a gay friend's place in '81. I gather she had quite a gay following.
Years later I heard an ALL THINGS CONSIDERED or FRESH AIR piece on her. Againl, I forgot to note her name but I recall her husband is her producer.

Sorry I can't be more exact.

The singer's name was Jo Stafford; she and her husband, Paul Weston, had an act that was a parody of bad lounge singing, and they called themselves "Jonathan and Darlene Edwards." She'd sing off-key, make strange noises, sing in a high pitched voice, repeat words, etc; he'd play piano in weird time (like 7/4), hit the wrong key, speed up the music and then abruptly slow down. To someone who had no idea it looked like they just plain sucked, but a lot of effort actually went into making it seem so bad. They won the 1960 Grammy for Best Comedy Album.

Is there an act like this that I could catch today ? This sounds like something I might like.

Kinda off-topic. But if you like stand-up, you should check Neil Hamburger out.
He's a character that's supposed to be the worst stand-up comedian ever, he's hilarious.

There were a couple of older folks, husband and wife, who used to play at The Dresden Lounge in L.A.-They are featured in the movie "Swingers". They're listed as Marty and Elayne Roberts. That sounds to close to Jonathan and Darlene Edwards, the comedy lounge act from the 60's, so what's up?? Are They a tribute to J & D?
..I'm told they still play The Dresden once in a while. Anyone know about these two?

People who like this sort of thing will find this to be the sort of thing they like. The closest thing I can think of is the Will Ferrell sketch from SNL a few years back where he had a beard (but no moustache) and played the electric piano as part of a lounge act for the "Alta Dena Middle School Mandatory Drug Program". Can't recall the name of the actress who sang with him.

Thanks for that!!

Yeah, ya gotta be good to pretend that you are that bad. Reminds me of PDQ Bach's parodies of classical music. The people that play those crazy pieces have GOT to be great musicians.

PDQ Bach was great. There was also a "Bad Shakespeare" writing contest somewhere. Some of the stuff is absolutely hysterical. It is difficult to do "bad" well.

reply

I'd love to know who did that, too. It was hilarious.

It was Ana Gasteyer and Will Ferrell...However they sang too good to be like the team of Jonathan and Darlene. It takes real talent to do what those two did all those years ago.
