Only negative thing about this movie,

Did anyone else find Fistful of Yen not at all funny?

the "lost drunken men who don't know who they are and don't care" bit was tedious

I am going to have to go ahead and respectfully disagree with you there. I think the bit was pure genius, great, great wordplay. Some of the best I've seen.

"Take this man to cell #1 and give him a drink!"

Well worth the time to set up the punchline.

In Mexico senor, these are the years of sadness.

Maybe you lack some background info to appreciate "Fistful of Yen". FoY is an excellent parody of the classic Bruce Lee movie "Enter the Dragon". Watch those movies back to back (EtD first), like I did 2 hours ago, and you will roll on the floor laughing.

reply

Yeah, that's it. Never seen Enter the Dragon. I'll check it out though.

reply

LOL...there you go. If you're not an Enter the Dragon lover, then some of these gags would probably fall flat and have no context, because this wasn't a spoof of many or all Kung Fu movies, it was a scene-for-scene takeoff of Enter the Dragon.

Such as when Loo puts the toy robot down to scare the thugs out of the control room. If you didn't see Bruce Lee did the same thing with a rattlesnake, then this scene might seem stupid to you.
Ahhhhhh, Toy Robot!

Also the message on Dr. Klahn's answering machine was comedy gold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10JZHuHZDos...but again if you didn't see the original may fall flat. I had the Kentucky Fried Movie version on my answering machine as a young tad for several years.

I'd seen Kentucky Fried Movie several times but not Enter The Dragon. When my boyfriend insisted that I watch the 'classic movie' a couple years ago I laughed all the way through - almost every scene. He got annoyed.

These go to eleven.

reply

Now THAT is some funny stuff...laugh thru the original, because you're thinking of the spoof. CLASSIC!

A close friend of mine had a similar experience when her Mum told her she should try watching You Only Live Twice. She couldn't stop laughing while watching it because she had previously watched the Austin Powers movies. Although each of those films aren't a scene for scene spoof of the movie it does reference some aspects of it or just the overall Bond movies. Chiefly of course with YOLT it's how Dr. Evil's appearance was modelled on Blofeld. Her Mum funnily enough got annoyed as well lol

reply

Yeah, that's the only reason why Fistful of Yen would've been tedious to watch...

reply

Having seen Enter the Dragon many times, Fistful of Yen was F-ing hilarious. Even if I hadn't seen ETD, I would probably think the same thing. It's the best part of the movie.

reply

Blasphemy!

reply

I think Fistful of Yen is the best part of the movie. I thought that before I even saw Enter the Dragon. When you see KFM before ETD, Enter the Dragon becomes far funnier than it is supposed to be.

reply

Parts of it were too funny but it lasted way too long. I think they could have cut it down by a good 15 or 20 minutes and put some more skits in the movie.

But I like toast. It's the muffins that must be stopped.

Take him to Detroit!

Get's me every time. That and the "What was that?..." bit. Especially with the dog..

reply

Take him to Detroit!

That was the only part of Fistful of Yen that I truly found funny...

reply

I know this thread started 3 years ago but I had to comment on this.

I loved this movie the first time I saw it, but the line "take him to Detroit" was confusing to me then. I had no idea why that was funny. I remember leaning over asking my friend, whats wrong with Detroit and he said, no idea. Of course back then, I was only 14 at the time (my friends and I manage to sneak in the theater at the Navy Base where it was playing). It wasn't till a year or 2 later when I finally got the joke (however, unfortunately, Cleveland became the city no one wanted to go to by then)

I have to find the movie and watch it again, I am sure its probably lame now but back then, I thought it was the funniest movie I ever saw (and having all that nudity wasn't bad either. <G> )

reply

NO WAY!

Fistful of Yen was hilarious! They should've had Mr.Lu talk even dorkier! Might as well go all the way with it!

reply

Fistful of Yen was great!

Its that man again!!

reply

Ya, seeing Enter the Dragon makes it for me. For a low budget movie, I thought A Fistful of Yen was put together very well.

reply

Ummm no... FoY was the best part in this movie.

reply

nope fistful of yen was just racist flat and severely lacking in jokes, the average Godfrey Ho film is far funnier. the only bit that gave me a half laugh was the final "I don't care"

Even if you hate Uwe Boll, give Postal a try, be offended or entertained.

reply

Funny... I didn't find FoY racist at all. What makes you think so?

reply

It doesn't make a distinction between different asian races for starters, kung fu movie called fistful of 'yen'? but then the actual equivalent would have been a fistful of (hong kong)dollars, but maybe racist was a bit harsh, dated is another.

"It doesn't make a distinction between different asian races for starters"

Northern and Southern Americans and Europeans are all called westerners but I don't think that's racist. Pretty much the same thing. And we have to remember it's only a comedy :)

"kung fu movie called fistful of 'yen'? but then the actual equivalent would have been a fistful of (hong kong)dollars"

I still think Fistful of Yen sounds way better than Fistful of Hong Kong dollars ;)

reply

I just didn't think it was funny
KFM 3/10
Airplane! 10/10

Yawn.

Another one of those mentally neutered people who can't resist using the dreaded R-word.

What a jolly good fun life must be for people who just can't get through a day without seeing "racism" in something.

"not making distinction between different Asian people". Jesus H. Christ almighty.

How can you live with this psychological affliction?

reply

I thought I'd said Retarded for a moment.

How about ignorant, is that better?

reply

Agreed!

This movie made fun of all genre movies of the time. Some of those movies were the Karate movies, as well as the Blaxploitation movies. Pretty hard to not make fun of those movies, without having some element of race.

That's Armaggedon made fun of all the cheezy white guys in the diaster movies of the times (Earthquake, Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure, etc..). They also mocked the WHITE talking heads on the evening news...so are those racist too? Naah, has to be non-white to be deemed racist, right?

But as to the racist comments about Fistfull of Yen....NOT A CHANCE!

I saw the movie with my best friend who is Korean, and he was dying laughing.

In fact, there were some inside things that made it even funnier for him:

Korean Grand Master Bong Soo Han, who played Dr Klahn, is barking out orders during the final massive fight scene, supposedly telling his henchman to attack Loo...exactly as was done in Enter the Dragon.

However, not speaking Korean, I did not realize until my buddy told me, because he was laughing out loud hysterically, exactly what he was saying;

Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Pizza, GET HIM!

He was essentially just blurting out American foods in Korean, and then adds a "Get Him" at the end.

That is not racism...that is comedy GOLD!
