Some help for a Yank...

There is a bit that I can't help think is some sort of inside joke among Brits. It is the dialogue between the Herald and the King, announcing all of King Bruno's titles (Conquerorrrrrrrrrrrrrr.....of...Fredonia...), and he forgets (and is prompted by the King) to reluctantly add "and Cornwall...".

So being a Yank, though I think it's very funny, exactly what is the joke about Cornwall?

My ignore list is much too long for a sig line.

It's because Cornwall has absolutely no empire to conquer. It's a quiet country composed almost entirely of fields and small woodlands. No armies, no barbarians, no nothing.

I'm sure the previous poster meant to write 'county' not 'country'. FYI Cornwall is also the southern most county of the British Isles - if you look at it on a map, it is at the bottom left corner of the UK.

reply

So then, the joke is "Cornwall is just an afterthought', right?

reply

Yeah pretty much ; I always took it as they know that conquering Cornwall is really not much to boast about, like almost anyone could do it.

reply

Cool, yeah I can see that. The King's proud and want's everything listed and everyone else thinks 'what's the point?'. Still makes me laugh....

Yeah it is a great line and one of the many reasons that I think Jabberwocky is a much underrated comedy :)

I live in Devon, next to cornwall and I can tell you all that is in cornwall is fields, bogs, 4 sheep and a man called Nigel.

reply

Cornwall! Love your famous game hens, dear.

"I don't deduce, I observe."

cornwall was a centre of the mining industry, producing silver, tin, and copper. It had been important for mining since prehistoric times, and continued to be an important industrial area until the mid 19th century. It would actually have been quite a rich source of revenue to anyone who conquered it.

Dangermouse I dunno if your still alive 10 years later and all but surely he meant "country". Not as in a Nation but country as in beautiful countryside. County is usually used as another way of partition of a Nation or State. County is the same as what the French and Louisiana call Parish.

How is, Nigel these days?

Cornwall is an incredibly beautiful county with spectacular coastline, marvellous beaches, great surfing, faubulous countryside, and tons of fascinating historical places. People who say there's nothing there know nothing.
