I think you summed up neatly what's to be said about this movie. Some of the things you bring up are partially the reasons why this is my favorite film. If you can, try to find Nobuhiko Ôbayashi's other films - although very experimental, cryptic and unfortunately un-subtitled, the central themes of childhood, growing up and youth in general are present in all of them (of which I've seen), and I think Ôbayashi handles that motif better than any other director I know of.

I just re-watched this movie and enjoyed it even more than the first time. It was so outrageous, I couldn't help but love it.

Can't stop the signal.
